The opening season of Formula 1 on Saturday, March 2, marks the beginning of a championship journey that will only end when the lights go out at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 3, 276 days from now.
This is the 74th edition of Formula 1 as a World Championship sanctioned by the FIA since 1950. The British Grand Prix, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Belgian Grand Prix, and the Italian Grand Prix remain on the calendar. Silverstone, Monte Carlo, Spa-Francorchamps, and Monza have stood the test of time.
Bahrain made its debut on the F1 calendar in 2004, and this year’s opening stage celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first Grand Prix held in the Middle East.
1. Bahrain (Sakhir) – March 2
The inaugural race in the Middle East celebrates its 20th anniversary, scheduled for a Saturday to accommodate Ramadan. The track is rough, with wind also playing a role. Lewis Hamilton emerged victorious five times in Bahrain. Fernando Alonso is the only active driver who participated in the debut in 2004.
2. Saudi Arabia (Jeddah) – March 9
Sergio Perez claimed victory last year, one of the few races his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen did not win. The Corniche circuit is the second longest and fastest of the season. It will also take place on a Saturday.
3. Australia (Melbourne) – March 24
Albert Park serves as a home race for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, but no Australian has ever triumphed at home. Hamilton has claimed pole position eight times in Melbourne, and McLaren has won eleven times.
4. Japan (Suzuka) – April 7
Held in September last year, Red Bull clinched the constructors’ title in Suzuka, owned by Honda, in 2023 with Verstappen’s consecutive victories in Japan. The figure-eight circuit is a home track for Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda. It has been two decades since Ferrari’s last victory, achieved by Michael Schumacher in 2004.
5. China (Shanghai) – April 21
Absent from the calendar since 2019, when Hamilton emerged victorious for Mercedes, Shanghai will host a sprint race for the first time. Sauber’s Guanyu Zhou will become the first Chinese Formula 1 driver to compete in front of his home crowd.
6. Miami – May 5
Last year’s fifth stage was a crucial moment. Verstappen and Perez were tied with two wins each, but Miami marked the start of Verstappen’s ten consecutive victories. This year, Miami will host a sprint race for the first time. It is one of three home races for Williams’ Logan Sargeant.
7. Emilia Romagna (Imola) – May 19
Cancelled last year due to floods, the anti-clockwise track is fast, bumpy, and narrow. It is named after Ferrari founder Enzo and his son Dino. The track also serves as a memorial to three-time Brazilian champion Ayrton Senna and Austrian Roland Ratzenberger, who tragically lost their lives during the 1994 race weekend.
8. Monaco – May 26
Although potentially overshadowed by newer and more glamorous venues, Monaco has a rich and captivating history. It is home to many drivers and features the shortest track, as well as the race with the most laps and fewest overtakes. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc could become the first Monegasque to win at home.
9. Canada (Montreal) – June 9
Held after Monaco and Spain last year, the Canadian Grand Prix is a home race for Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and team owner Lawrence Stroll. Hamilton claimed his first F1 victory here and shares the record (with Schumacher) of seven wins in Montreal. Verstappen emerged victorious in the last two editions.
10. Spain (Barcelona) – June 23
The start of a European sequence with Austria and Great Britain. Verstappen claimed his first F1 victory here in 2016. Hamilton shares the record of six wins with Schumacher. Alonso and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz represent the home drivers.
11. Austria (Spielberg) – June 30
Red Bull’s home race will once again feature a sprint race. The circuit has only ten corners and is the shortest race in terms of time. Verstappen has triumphed four times in Spielberg, which attracts a large contingent of Dutch fans.
12. Great Britain (Silverstone) – July 7
Present on the calendar since the inaugural season in 1950, Silverstone is a home race for Hamilton, his teammate George Russell, and McLaren’s Lando Norris. Hamilton has claimed eight victories and been on pole position seven times, with 13 podium finishes.
13. Hungary (Budapest) – July 21
Hamilton holds the record with eight wins in Hungary. Verstappen claimed his first F1 pole position here in 2019, while Alonso secured his first victory in 2003.
14. Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps) – July 28
Both Norris and Verstappen have Belgian mothers, making Spa a sort of home race for them. Verstappen has triumphed in the last three editions. The circuit features the longest lap in F1 and is one of the fastest.
15. Netherlands (Zandvoort) – August 25
Verstappen’s home race has seen him emerge victorious every year since its return to the calendar in 2021. Zandvoort, located in the coastal sand dunes, exudes a distinctly classic charm.
16. Italy (Monza) – September 1
The Temple of Speed, situated on the outskirts of Milan, hosts Ferrari’s home race. Hamilton and Schumacher share the record of five wins each at this circuit, famous for its long straights and 11 corners.
17. Azerbaijan (Baku) – September 15
Held in April last year and won by Perez for the second time in three years, the Baku street circuit has been on the calendar since 2016. Perez is the only driver to have claimed multiple victories at this venue.
18. Singapore – September 22
The only race that Red Bull did not win last year, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz emerging victorious. This hot and humid night race represents one of the most physically demanding challenges of the season.
19. United States (Austin) – October 20
The start of the second triple-header of the year, Austin will once again host a sprint race. All races at the Texas circuit, with its hills and anti-clockwise direction, have been won from the front row of the grid. Sargeant claimed his first and only point so far last year.
20. Mexico (Mexico City) – October 27
Verstappen emerged victorious in five of the last six races in Mexico, becoming the first driver to win 16 races in a season last year. Hamilton sealed his 2017 and 2018 titles in Mexico.
21. Brazil (São Paulo) – November 3
Interlagos is the only circuit to have a sprint race every year since its introduction in 2021. It will once again host a sprint race this year.
22. Las Vegas – November 23
The renowned Strip made its Formula 1 debut last year as the penultimate race, held on a Saturday night. Practice sessions were interrupted by a loose drain cover. This marks the start of the third and final triple-header of the season.
23. Qatar (Lusail) – December 1
Verstappen secured his third consecutive championship in a sprint race on Saturday last year. Qatar was the 17th stage in 2023 and held in October, with extreme heat posing a challenge for the main race. The weekend is once again scheduled to feature a sprint race.
24. Abu Dhabi (Yas Marina) – December 8
Verstappen has triumphed in the last four editions of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with the 2021 race marked by controversies as he claimed his first Formula 1 title by defeating Hamilton.
