Toprak Razgatlioglu, Misano, BMW Motorrad Motorsport
The Turkish rider of ROKiT BMW Motorrad, Toprak Razgatlioglu, dominated Race 1 in Misano, securing his fourth victory in the 2024 WorldSBK season.
The Turkish rider quickly took the lead and maintained a consistently fast pace, keeping Nicolo Bulega of Aruba.it Ducati and Alvaro Bautista at a distance.
Remy Gardner of GYTR GRT Yamaha had a good start, taking the lead from the outside of the first row, ahead of Razgatlioglu and Bautista. Bulega, on the other hand, dropped to fourth place in the first lap of the 21-lap race.
Unfortunately, Xavi Verge encountered problems early in the race, crashing in Sector 1.
Jonathan Rea had a difficult weekend, and it got worse when he had a heavy crash from his Pata Prometeon Yamaha at Turn 13. Although Rea limped away, his race was over.
Meanwhile, Bulega found himself in a fierce battle with Rea’s teammate Andrea Locatelli and Alex Lowes of Kawasaki. He lost positions to both in the early stages of the second lap, but managed to regain his position against Lowes at Turn 8.
Bulega then fought his way back to fourth place, joining his teammate Bautista in pursuit of the leaders Gardner and Razgatlioglu on the third lap.
Gardner, aiming for his first victory, lost the lead to Razgatlioglu, who took first position at Turn 8 on the fourth lap.
Razgatlioglu immediately started to pull away, gaining a 0.7-second advantage just one lap after taking the lead, while Gardner fell behind Bautista.
Bautista seized the opportunity with 16 laps to go, overtaking Gardner at Turn 10 to secure second place. Bulega followed suit with a bold move on the straight, overtaking the American rider.
The two Ducati riders were close, with Bulega trying to find a way to overtake his more experienced teammate.
However, this battle allowed Razgatlioglu to extend his lead to almost two seconds on the seventh lap, while Bautista struggled to keep up with the front of his Panigale V4R.
This gave Bulega the chance to move up to second place, and he set his sights on the race leader, Razgatlioglu.
After initially leading, Gardner began to struggle to keep up with the pace of the leaders. On the ninth lap, he was holding off riders like Locatelli, Lowes, and Andrea Iannone.
Locatelli made contact with Gardner at Turn 2 and attempted several overtakes throughout the ninth lap.
A successful overtake at Turn 1 on the tenth lap allowed Locatelli to pass Gardner, who then had to defend against Lowes to hold onto fifth place.
However, the American rider couldn’t prevent Lowes from moving up to fifth place at Turn 8.
By the halfway point of the race, Razgatlioglu seemed comfortable in the lead, with a lead of approximately two seconds over Bulega.
Bautista found himself in a lonely third position, one second behind his teammate and almost four seconds ahead of Locatelli.
With seven laps remaining, Sam Lowes’ hopes of finishing in the top ten were dashed when he crashed at Turn 14. The frustrated Marc VDS rider rejoined the race, but dropped to the back of the pack.
Razgatlioglu dominated the race up front, but Bulega was determined to catch him, overtaking the Turkish rider on the fifteenth lap by a narrow margin of two tenths of a second.
The mysterious BMW rider Razgatlioglu remained composed and maintained a steady lead of about 1.9 seconds over Bulega.
This difference remained until the checkered flag, while Razgatlioglu triumphantly crossed the finish line as the winner of Race 1, taking the championship lead with a three-point advantage over Bautista.
Bulega finished 1.782 seconds behind in second place, while Bautista finished 3.176 seconds behind the race winner in third.
Locatelli and A. Lowes completed the top five, with Gardner holding onto sixth position.
Iannone, from Team GoEleven Ducati, secured seventh place as the top independent rider, while Razgatlioglu’s teammate, Michael van der Mark, made an impressive recovery from 17th place on the grid to finish eighth.
Despite his injury, Danilo Petrucci from Barni Ducati fought bravely to secure a respectable ninth place, while Team HRC Honda rider Iker Lecuona emerged victorious in his battle with Kawasaki’s Axel Bassani to claim tenth place.
Garrett Gerloff took advantage of several retirements to finish 12th on his Bonovo Action BMW M 1000 RR, ahead of Ducati guest rider Michele Pirro.
Michael Ruben Rinaldi finished 14th with the Motocorsa Ducati Panigale V4R, and Gerloff’s teammate Scott Redding secured the final point in 15th position.
HRC’s Xavi Vierge recovered from his first lap crash to finish 16th, ahead of Yamaha MotoXRacing’s Phillipp Oettl.
Yamaha MotoXRacing’s Bradley Ray finished 18th, and despite being in the points for most of the race, a late crash relegated Puccetti Kawasaki’s Tito Rabat to 19th place.
Adam Norrodin from Petronas MIE Racing Honda completed the race in 20th place, while S. Lowes, Dominique Aegerter, Tarran Mackenzie, and Rea failed to finish.
