The future of Adrian Newey, one of Formula 1’s most revered and successful designers, has been a topic of intense speculation. Despite his long and storied career, retirement doesn’t seem to be on the horizon, according to insights shared by Jo Ramirez, a former McLaren team coordinator. Newey, who has spent the last two decades with Red Bull, is rumored to be considering a move, with Ferrari and Aston Martin emerging as the most likely contenders for his next chapter in F1.
Ramirez, speaking to Mundo Deportivo, expressed his belief that Newey is far from done with the sport. “I don’t think Adrian will retire,” he said. “I see him at Ferrari because any job you do successfully in F1, you have to do at Ferrari too. Ferrari is the biggest team in F1, and why not, if you have the opportunity?”
Ramirez suggested that the challenge for Newey might not be about money but rather the logistics of relocating to Italy, as he is content living in Great Britain. However, in today’s remote working environment, Ramirez believes this obstacle could be easily managed. “He could work remotely and fly to Italy two or three days a week,” he speculated. “He has the means, so why not?”
Ramirez, who worked closely with Newey during their time at McLaren, fondly recalled the designer’s approach to collaboration and innovation. “Adrian’s a great guy who really knows what a racing car needs to go fast. He’s demanding, like Ayrton Senna was, but he also listens. If you suggest something worthwhile, he’ll consider it.”
Newey’s legacy is inextricably linked to the tragic events of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, where Ayrton Senna lost his life in the Williams FW16—a car Newey designed. The subsequent legal case was a dark chapter in Newey’s career, during which Ramirez provided translation assistance as Newey faced the Italian courts. Reflecting on that time, Ramirez admitted it was a painful experience, as he was deeply affected by Senna’s death.
As the F1 community waits with bated breath, Newey’s next move remains shrouded in mystery. Whether he chooses to join Ferrari, Aston Martin, or stay with Red Bull, his decision will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future landscape of the sport.
