Young Rally sensation Kalle Rovanperä set the stage on fire at Rally Islas Canarias, leaving his competitors in the dust. The WRC’s newest asphalt rally witnessed Rovanperä dominating the shakedown, showcasing his exceptional skills behind the wheel.

Rovanperä’s blistering performance saw him topping the timesheets, a remarkable 2.5 seconds ahead of his closest rival on the challenging 6.26km Santa Brigida test. The two-time world champion displayed his prowess by outpacing his competitors by a staggering four seconds on the first run alone.

Despite admitting to being slightly out of practice on WRC asphalt compared to his rivals, Rovanperä’s immediate speed was truly awe-inspiring. His determination and focus were evident as he continuously pushed the limits, improving his best time by an additional 3.1 seconds on the second pass.

The rally kicked off with several drivers facing challenges during the pacenote-making process, with congested roads and narrow paths making it a daunting task. However, as the competition heated up, the focus shifted to the debut of Hankook’s hard compound asphalt tire, adding a new element of unpredictability.

Maintaining tire temperature and grip became crucial factors on the demanding mountain roads of Gran Canaria, with drivers like Elfyn Evans highlighting the tire management as a significant narrative of the weekend. Adrien Fourmaux echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need to handle the tires effectively throughout the intense corner sequences.

While some drivers struggled to adapt to the new Hankook tires, others like Grégoire Munster pushed themselves to extract the maximum performance. Despite his experience on Rally Islas Canarias, Munster acknowledged that track knowledge provided minimal advantage due to significant changes in the rally route.

In the midst of intense competition, Nikolay Gryazin emerged as the fastest WRC2 entrant, showcasing his skills and determination on the challenging terrain with his Śkoda Fabia RS. The rally also witnessed young talents like Sami Pajari and Josh McErlean pushing their limits to make their mark in the Rally1 field.

As the excitement unfolds at Rally Islas Canarias, the stage is set for a thrilling showcase of speed, skill, and determination as drivers battle it out for supremacy on the demanding asphalt tracks.
