Rajah Caruth Eyeing Las Vegas Comeback After Early Season Struggles in NASCAR Truck Series

The 2025 NASCAR Truck Series is off to a rollercoaster start. Two races in, we’ve seen the exhilarating highs and crushing lows of this adrenaline-fueled sport. While Kyle Busch is basking in the glory of his victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway, not all racers share his joy. Particularly, Rajah Caruth, the protégé of Bubba Wallace, is nursing the wounds of another disappointing finish.

Caruth, a rising star at Spire Motorsports, had hoped to rebound from an underwhelming performance at the Fresh From Florida 250. The 1.5-mile oval at Atlanta, however, dealt him another blow as he was forced to pull out early. Despite the setback, this tenacious driver is not allowing the Atlanta outcome to dampen his spirits. Instead, he’s already looking towards the Las Vegas race to reverse his luck.

Caruth’s season has been marred by misfortune so far. His early retirement from the Truck Series seemed eerily familiar. The young Georgia native was entangled in a multi-car crash at Daytona International Speedway, thanks to a sudden lane switch by Corey Heim that set off a chain reaction. This unfortunate event led to significant damage to Caruth’s No. 71 Chevy, forcing him out of the race.

The Atlanta race proved no better. Despite leading in second place during Stage 3, Caruth suffered a sudden spin, colliding with several trucks. “I felt like I had a tire go down, but the video showed it just pulled me around,” Caruth told Frontstretch. “It’s a shame to do that in front of the field, especially since we had some really fast Chevrolets. I’m pretty bummed about tearing up stuff.”

The spin-out had a domino effect on other drivers as well. Tyler Ankrum, Daniel Hemric, and Andres Perez were caught in the Lap 78 incident. William Sawalich, who tried desperately to avoid the chaos, had to retire early due to Caruth’s mishap. The race was briefly halted to clear the track debris before the action resumed at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Kevin Harvick, FOX NASCAR broadcaster, speculated on the cause of Caruth’s uncontrolled spin. “It looks like the tires are up, though, Joey. I don’t see one flat,” he told fellow broadcaster Joey Logano. Eventually, an oil spill was identified as the cause of the multi-car accident, leading to disastrous consequences for the Spire Motorsports driver. However, Caruth is now shifting his focus to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, hoping to turn his season around.

Caruth’s talent in NASCAR circles is well-recognized. After two full seasons in the Truck Series and significant backing from Hendrick Motorsports, he’s seen as a promising figure in the sport. He exceeded expectations with Spire Motorsports in 2024, scoring a win in Las Vegas and finishing seventh on the driver’s leaderboard. He also bagged the Most Popular Driver award, a significant improvement from his 16th-place finish in 2023.

Surprisingly, despite Caruth’s progress, Rick Hendrick did not include him in the Xfinity Series lineup, causing a wave of criticism. Instead, William Byron, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and Corey Day have been enlisted to drive the No. 17 Chevy. While the decision to exclude Bubba Wallace’s protégé raised eyebrows, Caruth’s early setbacks in the Truck Series might make this a disguised blessing.

Currently, Caruth hasn’t finished above the 29th position in either of the two races. But with the Las Vegas race on the horizon, he has a chance to turn things around. After all, it’s on this track that he secured his only victory in 52 Truck Series appearances. The young racer needs to let his performance do the talking if he hopes to ascend the NASCAR ladder and cement his place in the sport.
