Rain or Shine: Lewis Hamilton Surges Ahead in 2025 F1 Pre-Season Testing

In a thrilling display of skill and speed, Lewis Hamilton emerged as the fastest driver on the second day of the 2025 Formula 1 pre-season testing. He left competition eating his dust during the morning session, despite rainfall intervening in the day’s proceedings.

Unpredictable weather conditions threw a wrench into the works for a second consecutive day, curbing running time and forcing teams to adjust their strategies. The skies opened up in the early hours of the day, causing a ripple in the teams’ run plans. Nonetheless, drivers braved the slick track in a bid to clock the best times.

Setting an early benchmark, George Russell in his Mercedes registered a lap time of 1:30.379s. However, his lead was short-lived as Hamilton, in a show of pure class, clocked a quicker time of 1:30.080s.

As the rain continued its downpour, the track surface became unfit for dry tyres, leading to teams retreating back to the garage. Bucking the trend, Haas and Aston Martin chose to equip their cars with wet-weather tyres. Just before the session hit the halfway point, Esteban Ocon of Haas returned to the battle, armed with intermediate tyres.

Two hours into the session, Hamilton was dominating the timing sheets, with Carlos Sainz of Williams and Russell trailing behind. Russell, despite completing the most laps of the morning session (71), was quickly eclipsed by Hamilton who posted an impressive lap time of 1:29.670s.

Rookie Oscar Piastri in his McLaren had a sluggish start to the day. His fortunes took a turn for the worse when he collided with Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber at Turn 8, leaving only half an hour on the clock. Hamilton, undeterred by the unfolding drama, carved out an even quicker lap time of 1:29.379s, reaffirming his position as the fastest driver of the morning session.

As the session neared its conclusion, the FIA initiated a test of the Virtual Safety Car system, which necessitated the waving of the red flag, two formation laps, and a practice start.

The final leaderboard saw Russell in second place with a lap time of 1:29.778s, followed by Sainz clocking 1:30.090s. Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin took the fourth and fifth spots with times of 1:30.430s and 1:30.700s respectively.

Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls secured the sixth position with a time of 1:30.793s, edging out Piastri who clocked 1:30.821s. Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, despite managing only 28 laps, secured the eighth spot with a time of 1:31.233s. Hulkenberg and Ocon rounded out the top 10, with times of 1:31.457s and 1:33.071s respectively.

Hamilton’s triumph in the second morning of the 2025 F1 pre-season testing reaffirms his reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the track, setting the stage for an exciting F1 season.
