Rahal finds himself at a disadvantage in terms of engine usage, along with Kyffin Simpson, as the NTT IndyCar Series reveals penalties ahead of the Detroit Grand Prix this weekend.
Both Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s #15 car and Chip Ganassi Racing’s #4 car will be using their fifth engine, resulting in a six-position grid penalty for events on road courses.
While engine usage penalties are not uncommon in IndyCar, they are usually imposed later in the season. However, with Rahal and Simpson opting for a fifth engine only in the sixth race of the 2024 calendar, it is highly likely that they will face additional grid drops throughout the remainder of the season.
These unauthorized engine changes are a direct consequence of multiple complete failures experienced by Honda engines during the Month of May, which will undoubtedly affect Honda teams’ compliance with regulations for the rest of the season.
Furthermore, the early use of engines allocated for the season means that any future race results will not contribute to Honda’s manufacturer championship aspirations, further exacerbating their battle against Chevrolet.
It is important to note that only the manufacturer championship is affected by these circumstances, and driver points will still be awarded as usual. The grid drop serves as a penalty imposed on the drivers.
The IndyCar Detroit Grand Prix, featuring 100 laps, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 2nd, at 12:30 pm Eastern time, and will race through the streets of downtown Detroit.
