In a shocking turn of events at the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls expressed his disappointment and labeled his team as ‘naive’ for underestimating the threat posed by Aston Martin. The surprise performance by the Aston Martins, securing fifth and sixth places with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, stunned many as they had struggled in the previous race.

Despite qualifying in ninth place, Lawson felt that more was within reach for him and his team. Surprisingly, Lawson out-qualified his teammate Isack Hadjar and was just a hair’s breadth away from outperforming Max Verstappen, who settled for eighth place. The significant gap between Lawson and the Aston Martins left the New Zealander reflecting on his team’s misjudgment of the competition.

Speaking to the media, Lawson admitted, “To be honest, we thought that maybe they were running a little bit light [on fuel] through practice, but clearly, they’ve just got good speed.” He acknowledged their oversight and praised the performance of the Aston Martin team in qualifying.

Despite the closeness in timing to Verstappen, Lawson remains realistic about his chances of competing with the Red Bull driver. Instead, he sets his sights on challenging the Astons and Gabriel Bortoleto, who achieved a career-best seventh place. Lawson emphasized that they failed to maximize the car’s potential in qualifying and aims to rectify that in the race.

With the Hungarian Grand Prix promising intense competition, Lawson recognizes the strength of the Aston Martins and the challenges they pose. As the tension builds on the grid, all eyes are on the Racing Bulls team and their quest to overcome the underestimated competition.
