Fabio Quartararo believes that Marc Marquez’s departure from Honda last season had a significant impact on Yamaha. This led Quartararo to renew his contract with the Japanese MotoGP team. Quartararo recently signed an extension that will keep him at Yamaha until the 2025 season. Despite Yamaha’s ongoing difficulties, the Frenchman remains committed to the manufacturer that gave him his MotoGP debut in 2019. Marquez, who had been with Honda throughout his premier class career, decided to switch to Gresini Ducati this season and is now competing at the front of the pack. Quartararo believes that the possibility of him considering a similar move forced Yamaha to make the necessary changes to keep him. He stated that many people were waiting for this moment and that he chose to stay with Yamaha because of the project. Quartararo also mentioned that Marquez’s move from Honda to Ducati was a wake-up call for Yamaha. The team has since hired new engineers and made significant changes, with many developments happening in Italy instead of Japan. This change has resulted in faster changes in parts. Quartararo found it interesting to continue with Yamaha because of these changes. When Quartararo signed his contract extension, doubts arose. However, Yamaha revealed that it is restructuring its partnership with new employees. The team’s change in approach, willingness to invest, and the new concessions structure in MotoGP starting in 2024 were all factors that influenced Quartararo’s decision. He understands why people had doubts, as he himself was considering leaving for another team a few months ago. He did not reveal which team he was considering, but acknowledged that Yamaha is investing a significant amount to improve its bike. He believes that Yamaha is one of the few brands investing so much in this project. Quartararo hopes to see some improvements this year, although he anticipates that it will still be challenging to fight for podiums. He sees this year as crucial for the next two seasons.
