After a stellar 2024 season that saw McLaren clinch its first Constructors’ Championship in 26 years, the team now faces a new challenge: navigating the fierce competition between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as both drivers gear up for a shot at the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, Zak Brown, McLaren’s Chief Executive, admitted that managing two title-contending drivers would “be a challenge at times.” However, he remained optimistic, emphasizing the team’s commitment to fairness and transparency.

McLaren’s Momentum and Ambitions

Norris sealed McLaren’s Constructors’ title in dramatic fashion with a victory at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, capping off a season in which he secured eight pole positions and several key wins. Brown believes this success provides the perfect springboard for the team to target the elusive Drivers’ Championship.

Zak Brown on McLaren’s 2025 goal:
“I think you want the clean sweep. Why not be greedy? And say, ‘I want the drivers’ one too and the constructors’ too.’ That’s the goal going into next year.”

With McLaren’s rapid development over the past two seasons, including game-changing upgrades debuted at the 2023 Austrian GP, Brown is confident the team can provide a car capable of sustaining a season-long title fight for both drivers.

The Norris-Piastri Dynamic

While Norris, entering his seventh season with McLaren, has emerged as the team’s leading force, Oscar Piastri has proven his mettle in his first two F1 campaigns. Despite Norris clearly outperforming his teammate in 2024, Piastri showed flashes of brilliance, setting the stage for a potentially intense intra-team rivalry.

Both drivers have made it clear that they intend to challenge for the title in 2025:

  • Lando Norris post-Abu Dhabi GP:
    “Next year is my year.”
  • Oscar Piastri after the race:
“My target for 2025 is the Drivers’ Championship.”

Zak Brown on Managing the Competition

Acknowledging the difficulty of balancing the ambitions of two equally capable drivers, Brown emphasized the importance of maintaining fairness and fostering a positive team culture. He highlighted the camaraderie between Norris and Piastri, citing Norris’ gesture in Qatar, where he voluntarily swapped positions to repay a favor to his teammate.

Zak Brown on their relationship:
“They’re great teammates, they’re great team players… Of course, come showtime, they both want to win, but they race each other cleanly.”

However, Brown is prepared for the inevitable tension that comes with two drivers chasing the same prize:

“Only one of them can finish first in any weekend. I’m sure it will be a challenge at times, but we’ll just take it one race at a time.”

Brown reiterated that McLaren would prioritize fairness and avoid team orders that could derail the competitive spirit:

“We treat everyone fairly, equally, transparently, so there’s no surprises.”

2025: A Battle for Supremacy

McLaren’s resurgence, capped by their Constructors’ Championship triumph, has put the team in a position to contend with the sport’s elite. While Norris’ experience and 2024 heroics make him the favorite heading into 2025, Piastri’s growing confidence and potential ensure that the battle for supremacy will be anything but straightforward.

The potential for fireworks within McLaren’s garage has fans eagerly anticipating the 2025 season. As Zak Brown said:

“Hopefully, we have the challenge of two drivers fighting for the same Drivers’ Championship at the last race of the year. I’m sure that will be nerve-wracking.”

For McLaren, success in 2025 won’t just be measured by trophies—it’ll also be about navigating the fine line between competition and collaboration, ensuring both Norris and Piastri have an equal shot at glory.
