Pressure Mounts for Joe Gibbs as Grandson Ty Gibbs Struggles to Maintain NASCAR Legacy

The famed NASCAR team, Joe Gibbs Racing, is facing an unexpected crisis. The team, which has a reputation for nurturing exceptional talents such as Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch, is grappling with a unique challenge. This challenge comes in the form of one of their own, Ty Gibbs, the grandson of the legendary coach himself, Joe Gibbs. As the 2025 Cup Series unfolds, Ty’s performance has left fans, pundits, and his own family in a state of distress and disappointment.

Ty Gibbs’ lackluster performance is taking a toll on the team’s morale. His recent mishap at the Kubota High Limit Racing Heat 3 on March 15, 2025, where he flipped his No. 84 Monster Energy Drink car at Las Vegas and finished sixth, underscores his struggle. This incident, coupled with his admission that he’s made poor decisions on the track, is likely to raise concerns for Joe Gibbs, who only recently gave his drivers the green light to return to dirt racing.

Ty’s struggles extend beyond this single incident. After 77 starts with Joe Gibbs Racing, he is yet to taste victory. If this winless streak continues for two more races, Ty will become the longest-tenured JGR Cup driver without a win, surpassing JJ Yeley’s unenviable record of 78 winless starts. His track record so far in 2025 is not encouraging either, with his only top-20 finish being a P16 at Daytona.

This underperformance has triggered questions around Ty’s capabilities, with fans wondering what’s happened to the driver who claimed the 2022 Xfinity title. His controversial victory at the 2022 Xfinity Series race at Martinsville, where he spun his teammate Brandon Jones in the last lap to win, is still fresh in the minds of fans. His response to this incident, where he compared himself to Jesus who was hated first, has not endeared him to NASCAR fans either.

The pressure is also mounting on Joe Gibbs. Despite having team members like Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe performing exceptionally well this season, Ty’s lack of results is threatening to tarnish the team’s sterling reputation. JGR co-owner Dave Alpern has expressed his concern about Ty’s performance and the impact it’s having on the No. 54 team.

Joe Gibbs is faced with a difficult predicament. As the team owner and Ty’s grandfather, he is torn between family loyalty and the need to deliver results. Ty’s new crew chief, Tyler Allen, could bring some stability, but if Ty’s performance does not improve, Joe may have to make some tough decisions, including possibly benching his grandson.

Adding to the drama is Carson Hocevar’s outburst at Ty Gibbs, following an incident on the pit road. Hocevar’s anger, fueled by Gibbs’ aggressive driving, adds another layer of scrutiny to Ty’s already shaky season.

The stakes are exceptionally high for Joe Gibbs. He will need to draw upon his NFL experience to steer his grandson through this tumultuous period. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if Ty can turn his fortunes around and silence his critics. But for now, Joe Gibbs is under the spotlight, and the path ahead appears fraught with challenges.
