The winner of the 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing), the second-placed Lando Norris (McLaren), and the third-placed Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) were featured in tabloid format.
Q: Max, what an incredible race. You had a fantastic start, but Lando really challenged you. Did you feel the pressure at the end?
Max VERSTAPPEN: Definitely, I had to push myself to the limit throughout the race. We faced some difficulties with the hard tires, but the medium tires worked well for us. However, in the last 10-15 laps, I struggled with grip and was sliding a lot. Lando was closing in, so I had to give it my all. It’s tough when the tires are no longer working, but I managed to avoid mistakes and secure the win.
Q: On Friday, it seemed like you weren’t comfortable with the car. But you and your team made significant changes and managed to turn things around. How much do you lead within the team?
MV: We made several changes to the car and despite limited information before the race, we were able to secure pole position and the win. I am proud of the progress we made over the weekend.
Q: Lando, it was a close race! Do you think with a few more laps, you could have overtaken Max?
Lando NORRIS: Yes, it’s painful to admit, but with a few more laps, I believe I could have challenged Max. I fought until the last lap. Max had the advantage in the first part of the race, but we were stronger in the second part. It’s a shame we couldn’t catch him in time, but overall, I’m happy with our performance.
Q: You must be thrilled. You came into the weekend with a different car. Did you expect to be battling with Max here in Imola?
LN: Yes, we were confident going into the weekend. We have reached a point where we can compete with Ferrari and Red Bull. The team has done an excellent job and we are all working hard. Our focus remains the same; we are just fighting for higher positions now. It’s frustrating not to win, but considering the improvements we have made, it’s what we should expect.
Q: Charles, congratulations on your first podium in Imola. How do you feel?
Charles LECLERC: Thank you. Being on the podium is an achievement, but I am only truly happy when I win. Today, we didn’t get there, but our race pace was strong. We had difficulties in qualifying, but overall, things are looking good for the rest of the season. It’s amazing to be on the podium here in Imola with the passionate tifosi.
Q: Does this performance give you confidence for the next race, especially being your home race?
CL: Monaco is always special, just like Imola. I am excited to race there and see the support from the fans. We will give our best and aim for a good result.
Q: Max, the last few laps were intense. How challenging was it to maintain your position?
MV: The last few laps were tough, especially with worn tires. It felt like driving on ice and I had to be extremely cautious. Lando was closing in, but I pushed as hard as I could with the grip I had. Fortunately, I managed to keep him behind and secure the victory.
Q: Were you worried about Lando’s threat? When did you realize he could catch you?
MV: When Lando started closing the gap by half a second per lap, I knew it was a significant challenge. However, I couldn’t suddenly extract more speed from the car. I focused on driving without making mistakes and maximizing speed on the straights. The rear wing we had helped us defend in the last laps.
Q: Considering the car setup issues on Friday, are you satisfied with your performance today?
MV: We had difficulties during the long runs on Friday and I was not happy with the car’s performance. However, we made improvements throughout the weekend and the car felt better during qualifying and the race. We still need to analyze why the hard tires didn’t work optimally, but overall, I am satisfied with our progress.
Q: What can we expect from you in Monaco next weekend?
MV: Monaco is a completely different track, so it’s hard to predict. However, the competition is fierce and we need to get all aspects of qualifying and race strategy right. Monaco is always challenging, but we will give it our best shot.
Q: Max, this is your second victory this weekend, including the virtual 24 hours of Nürburgring. Have you achieved a double feat like this before?
MV: No, this is the first time I have achieved a double victory, especially in a single day. It required a lot of preparation and I am thrilled with the result.
Q: Lando, you mentioned the limitations of your car in slow corners. How concerning is this for Monaco and have you noticed any improvements?
LN: Slow corners have been a challenge for us, but we have made some changes for Monaco. The setup is different and we hope it will address our weaknesses. However, Monaco is a unique track and we will have to assess our performance during practice.
Q: Do you still believe that McLaren has the third fastest car?
LN: It’s hard to say. The competition is fierce and the ranking positions can be influenced by various factors. We are competing against top teams like Ferrari and Red Bull, and our goal is to maintain this level of performance. The skill and judgment of the driver play a significant role in achieving success.
Q: Charles, how special was it to be on the podium in Imola?
CL: Being on the podium in Imola is always special, but I am only truly satisfied when I win. Our race pace was strong and we had some difficulties in qualifying. However, it is a positive sign for the rest of the season and I am grateful for the support of the tifosi.
Q: How confident are you in winning in Monaco?
CL: Monaco is a special track for me and I am confident in our abilities. We have had speed in the past and I believe we can be competitive this year. It’s my home race and I am excited to race in front of the passionate fans.
Q: Lando, Max took part in a simulation race between qualifying and the race. Would you consider doing something similar?
LN: I used to do a lot of simulation races, but I have moved away from that recently. I have other interests, like golf, that I enjoy. Simulation races can be mentally demanding, but I don’t think they would have a big physical impact. I respect Max’s dedication to simulation races, but it’s not something I would choose to do on a Saturday night.
Q: Max, you received a warning about track limits during the race. Did it affect your driving style?
MV: Yes, I was informed about the track limits and adjusted my driving accordingly. I had to be more cautious and make sure to stay within the lines. This required extra focus, especially in the final laps.
