In a shocking turn of events, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the FIA, is facing a major crisis as his deputy president, Robert Reid, resigns, citing a “breakdown of governance standards” and decisions made without due process. This latest defection of a key figure within the FIA management adds to the mounting criticism against Ben Sulayem’s leadership.

Reid’s abrupt departure comes after being barred from a World Motor Sport Council meeting for refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which he described as a “gagging order.” The criticism is not isolated, as Motorsport UK chairman David Richards also expressed concerns about the opaque governance of the FIA and the concentration of power in the hands of the president.

Ben Sulayem’s management style has been under scrutiny, with several high-profile resignations, including that of chief executive Natalie Robyn and other key officials. Critics have accused him of adopting an authoritarian leadership approach, leading to a purge of executives and stewards at the FIA. Additionally, Ben Sulayem has faced allegations of intervening in sporting decisions, including overturning penalties and influencing the certification of new Grand Prix circuits.

The controversy surrounding Ben Sulayem’s presidency has escalated further with the recent changes in the FIA’s governance structure, limiting accountability and granting sweeping powers to the president and the senate president. Despite facing probes and ethical complaints, Ben Sulayem has managed to clear his name, further fueling the tensions within the organization.

The resignation of deputy president Reid, who was once a running mate of Ben Sulayem, signals a significant rift within the FIA leadership. As Ben Sulayem gears up for re-election, opposition against him is gaining momentum, with calls for transparency and accountability growing louder. The upcoming election poses a challenge for any potential candidates, as Ben Sulayem enjoys considerable support from the General Assembly.

With the fate of Ben Sulayem’s presidency hanging in the balance, the power struggle within the FIA is intensifying. As the wave of dissent swells, the future of the organization remains uncertain, with the possibility of a seismic shift in leadership on the horizon.
