Max Verstappen, from the Netherlands, competed in the Formula 1 World Championship at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 7, 2024. During this event, James Allison, Technical Director of Mercedes, expressed doubts about the recent updates made by Red Bull, suggesting that they may have hindered their performance. He stated that these updates could potentially cause problems for Red Bull. The team has recently faced challenges from Ferrari and McLaren, who have made significant progress. Lando Norris from McLaren claimed victory in Miami and pressured Verstappen in Imola, while Charles Leclerc secured a win for Ferrari in Monaco. Verstappen attributed Red Bull’s difficulties in Monte Carlo to their long-standing weakness in handling bumps and dips, which became more apparent as the competition intensified. Allison further suggested that the updates made by Red Bull on their RB20 car in Imola may not have provided the expected improvements based on wind tunnel tests. He expressed hope that this situation would negatively affect Red Bull’s performance. Allison emphasized the importance of confidence in the tools and equipment used by the team, as losing confidence can lead to setbacks and wasted time. Time is considered a valuable resource in this sport, and losing it can be detrimental. When asked if Mercedes found encouragement in seeing Red Bull face challenges, Allison humorously replied that people in this industry always enjoy witnessing the misfortunes of others. Mercedes has actively sought development in recent races to recover from a disappointing start to the season with their new car concept. Team principal Toto Wolff mentioned in Monaco that they have now discovered the correct approach to unlock the full potential of the current generation of cars. With the introduction of a realigned front suspension in Canada, Allison emphasized the importance of continuous progress as their main focus. He acknowledged that the team has made improvements compared to previous races and expressed optimism about future advancements. Despite a rough start to the season, Mercedes has managed to close the gap and is now in contention for the top positions.
