Porsche dominates the roar before the 24: what it means for Daytona 24 Hours showdown

Porsche Reigns Supreme in ‘Roar Before the 24’ as GTP Rivals Struggle to Keep Up

In a stunning display of dominance at the ‘Roar before the 24’ test for the upcoming 24 Hours of Daytona, Porsche has left competitors reeling, as all three of its 963 models clinched session-best times. The private JDC-Miller Porsche, even running last year’s specifications, proved that Porsche’s prowess is unmatched, capturing the attention of fans and rival teams alike.

As the teams participated in six out of seven sessions—one reserved exclusively for Bronze-rated drivers—the Porsche lineup asserted its superiority right from the get-go, achieving blistering lap times in the low 1m36s range. This remarkable performance not only secured the top three spots in cumulative standings but also sent a clear message: Porsche is the one to beat in the upcoming race. While the team showcased impressive consistency, lap times under 1m40s were crucial for evaluating performance across the board.

The competition, however, is fierce. The WRT BMW, piloted by the #24 car, and the #10 WTR Cadillac also made their presence known, with both teams recording impressive times. Notably, the testing sessions revealed a significant gap between the frontrunners and the struggling Aston Martin, which missed critical track time while undergoing an engine change. With their performance hampered, Aston Martin is left scrambling as the clock ticks down to race day.

Both Acura ARX-06s faced their own hurdles early in the sessions, grappling with unspecified issues that limited their time on the track. Yet, as the sessions progressed, they began to find their rhythm. Meanwhile, Cadillac emerged as a formidable contender, proving to be the second-strongest force on track. The gap in average lap times between Cadillac, WRT BMW, and Acura remains razor-thin, with the latter two teams pushing hard to close the distance.

Porsche’s LMDh project chief, Urs Kuratle, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We completed the test program cleanly and were able to focus exclusively on our plan throughout. The Porsche 963 ran flawlessly, and the drivers delivered strong performances.” His confidence is palpable as the team gears up for the season opener, yet he remains cautious, noting that the true competitive order will only become clear during race week.

Cadillac’s Filipe Albuquerque echoed similar sentiments, relishing the balance of his car and the productive test sessions. “Now it’s time to analyze data and get ready for the race,” he affirmed, signaling that the team is ready to turn their momentum into victory.

Meanwhile, BMW’s Sheldon van der Linde hinted that their time on the track might not reflect their full potential. “We’ve spent the past few days working through the initial adjustments as new team members joined, setting a strong foundation moving forward,” he remarked. With the race drawing near, BMW is focused on performance, hoping to battle for a podium finish.

If the Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations remain unchanged, Porsche stands as the clear favorite for the win. The other manufacturers, with the exception of Aston Martin, enjoyed relatively smooth test sessions, leaving IMSA with a solid understanding of where the updated cars stand.

With three more practice sessions and qualifying set for Thursday and Friday, the stage is set for an electrifying showdown at Daytona. As the teams prepare to unleash their full potential, fans can hardly wait to witness the high-octane action that lies ahead. The 24 Hours of Daytona is not just a race; it’s a battle for supremacy, and right now, Porsche is leading the charge.
