I have always fantasized about having enough wealth to own a magnificent Formula 1 car from the past or a renowned sports car with Le Mans pedigree. Would I actually race with it? Probably not, I would simply admire it from a designated spot in my luxurious mansion. As I mentioned earlier, this remains just a dream.
During my childhood, I used to build Tamiya model kits of racing cars. Nowadays, I can hardly find the tiny components that require adhesive to transform them from molded plastic pieces into scale replicas of the genuine article. However, why should I bother building it myself?
Taking the art of building model cars to a whole new level is Hornby Hobbies. This journey began in 1901 in Liverpool, when founder Frank Hornby applied for a patent to protect an invention he called ‘Improvements in Toys or Educational Devices for Children and Youth’.
This invention eventually became known as Meccano and, in 1964, Hornby and Meccano were acquired by a competitor known as Tri-ang. Hornby Railways regained its independence during the 1980s and has since maintained its reputation as one of Britain’s most iconic companies.
Browsing through their website, I was fascinated by a model of an iconic car that reigned supreme in the 1970s: Colin Chapman’s Lotus 72D. This vehicle, driven by the Brazilian prodigy of that time, Emerson Fittipaldi, formed one of the most successful partnerships ever seen in Formula 1.
Immortalized in the form of Pocher, this model kit consists of an exceptional collection of 477 high-quality die-cast and pre-painted metal pieces.
The Lotus 72D stood out from its competitors due to its distinctive wedge-shaped design, which allowed it to utilize advanced aerodynamics that were light years ahead of its time. Equipped with the legendary Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 engine and its aerodynamic shape, the Lotus 72D achieved higher speeds while generating greater downforce to maneuver through corners.
Fortunately, enthusiasts can proudly display this piece of racing history in their homes with Pocher’s state-of-the-art recreation of the Lotus 72D, restoring it to its rightful place on a pedestal.
And that’s not all. The first model that caught my eye in the ‘Hornby Garage’ is none other than the grandest of all sports cars: the Porsche 917.
Pocher proudly presents the Porsche 917 – Gulf Edition 1:8 Scale. This meticulously crafted iconic model pays tribute to the legendary triumph at Le Mans in 1971.
The Porsche 917, a legendary vehicle that dominated the tracks during the 1970s, is now immortalized in a detailed 1:8 scale replica by Pocher. Designed for discerning collectors and automotive enthusiasts, this model, made up of 312 pieces, captures all the intricate details and the essence of the original racing legend.
The Porsche 917’s victory at the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans marked a historic moment in the world of racing, solidifying its reputation as a true track legend.
Driven by racing icons such as Derek Bell, Gijs van Lennep, and Helmut Marko, this iconic car showcased unparalleled performance, agility, and endurance, dominating the competition and etching its name in the annals of motorsport history.
Created with precision parts and using various materials such as metal, rubber, fabrics, and high-quality plastic, each Pocher model showcases the brand’s unwavering dedication to excellence. From the meticulously replicated structure to the intricately designed interior, every aspect of this model exudes authenticity and meticulousness. The model specifications include a length of 522mm, a width of 267mm, a height of 135mm, and a weight of 6kg.
Scott Elsey, Managing Director of Pocher, expressed his excitement in launching the Porsche 917 in the market. He emphasized how this model, with its unparalleled craftsmanship and attention to detail, epitomizes his commitment to excellence and passion for automotive heritage. Elsey firmly believes that this masterpiece will captivate collectors and enthusiasts.
The release of Pocher’s Porsche 917 marks a significant milestone in the world of collectible automotive replicas. It offers enthusiasts a remarkable opportunity to own a piece of racing history and engage in the excitement of historic endurance racing firsthand.
Whether as the centerpiece of a collection or admired for its unmatched artistry, this model embodies the timeless appeal of Porsche’s racing legacy.
