Revolutionary Wet Tire Testing at Silverstone: George Russell Conquers 480 km in Two Days

The roaring engines echoed through Silverstone as Mercedes generously provided a mule car for the groundbreaking wet tire development work by Pirelli for the year 2026. George Russell took the wheel for the intense testing session, completing a remarkable 480 kilometers over two action-packed days.

Under the watchful eyes of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, the track witnessed a fierce battle between different prototypes of extreme wet and intermediate tires. The challenging National layout of the circuit, drenched with water sprayed by tankers, set the stage for a thrilling showdown.

Russell’s dominance was undeniable as he zipped around the track, clocking in the fastest time of 46.190 seconds and completing a total of 80 laps. The young driver’s stellar performance pushed the total distance covered during the testing to an impressive 480 kilometers, setting a new benchmark for wet tire evaluations.

Pirelli’s Motorsport Director, Mario Isola, expressed his gratitude towards Mercedes and their drivers for their invaluable collaboration. Isola highlighted the significance of the testing session in refining the wet weather tires, building on the insights gained from previous tests at Paul Ricard earlier in January.

Looking ahead, the next phase of tire testing is scheduled for June, with a focus on slick tires. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will host the upcoming tests on June 3rd and 4th, where Mercedes and Racing Bulls will take center stage. Subsequently, on June 19th and 20th, Ferrari will exclusively tackle wet tire testing at their private Fiorano track, equipped with an advanced artificial asphalt irrigation system.

As the teams gear up for further tire development challenges, the competition intensifies, setting the stage for an electrifying 2026 season. Stay tuned for more adrenaline-pumping updates from the world of Formula 1 as the battle for tire supremacy rages on.
