Esteban Ocon had his race at the Monaco Grand Prix interrupted after a daring maneuver. Ocon and Pierre Gasly, both French drivers, were performing well on the Monegasque circuit. They had made it through the first qualifying round and secured starting positions in the top 10. However, their hopes of scoring points were dashed when they collided with each other during the chaotic first lap of the race.
Gasly had started in 10th position, with Ocon right behind in 11th. Unfortunately, Ocon attempted a risky maneuver to overtake his teammate, resulting in contact between their cars. This caused Ocon’s car to go airborne and compromised his chances of scoring points for the team.
Gasly immediately expressed his frustration over the radio, questioning why Ocon had made such a dangerous move. The race was already under a red flag due to a major accident at Turn 2, making Ocon’s decision even more questionable.
The Alpine management was not pleased with the incident. Vice President and Team Principal Bruno Famin acknowledged that the team was against Ocon’s risky maneuver. Famin stated that the circumstances did not justify such an attack and that the team would investigate the incident and take appropriate action.
Famin also criticized Ocon for attempting the maneuver at Le Portier corner, considering it unnecessary. The narrow streets of Monaco required a calm and cautious approach, and Ocon’s actions may have caused damage to his car.
Despite the collision, both drivers will need to continue working together to achieve the best possible results for the team. Ocon was forced to retire from the race due to the damage sustained to his car, leaving Gasly as the team’s only hope of scoring points.
