Oscar Piastri capitalized on the battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris to secure second place in the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix. The Australian driver qualified in third place and maintained that position until Norris overtook Verstappen on lap 3. Although Norris briefly took the lead, Verstappen quickly regained it by overtaking the McLaren driver in the next corner. Taking advantage of the situation, Piastri seized the opportunity to pass his teammate and move up to second place. However, he couldn’t keep up with Verstappen’s pace and finished the race 4.6 seconds behind the Red Bull driver.

When asked if he believed Verstappen was beatable in the early stages of the race, Piastri responded affirmatively. He acknowledged that Verstappen had a good start compared to himself and Norris, but he managed to stay within the DRS zone and closely follow Verstappen’s moves. Piastri described the situation as if he was sitting with his popcorn, eagerly waiting to see what would happen. Despite his patience and successful overtaking of Norris, Piastri admitted that he struggled in the second half of the race and couldn’t keep up with Verstappen’s pace.

Once Verstappen got rid of the McLaren threat, Piastri found himself under pressure from his teammate Norris in the final laps. He acknowledged that it was difficult to defend his position, especially when the car behind him was within the DRS zone. However, Piastri noted that the impact of DRS was less significant towards the end of the race due to the high temperatures affecting tire performance. In the end, he managed to hold off Norris and secure second place, although he recognized that any mistake could have cost him the position.

Piastri felt encouraged with his performance at the Red Bull Ring, considering it a significant improvement compared to the challenging weekend he had in Spain. He expressed satisfaction with the car’s performance during the practice sessions and qualifying sessions, and hopes that the issues faced in Barcelona were isolated incidents.
