Piastri Triumphs at Spa—Missteps Cost Norris as Rain Drama Unfolds

Oscar Piastri collects his sixth win of the season to extend his championship lead—after a delayed and chaotic race at Spa.

🌧️ Rain Delay Disrupts Belgian GP Start

The Belgian Grand Prix was delayed by nearly 90 minutes due to heavy rain and poor visibility, forcing an initial formation lap behind the safety car followed by a red flag pause. Drivers, including Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, reported near-zero visibility—prompting the prolonged hold. Once track conditions stabilized, an extended safety-car stint paved the way for a rolling start, drawing criticism from Max Verstappen, who called the delays “too cautious.”

🏁 Piastri Capitalises on Early Opportunism

When the race finally commenced under racing conditions, Lando Norris started from pole position, narrowly outrunning teammate Oscar Piastri in qualifying by just hundredths of a second.

Not long after, Piastri executed a clean move under the safety-car start to overtake Norris, exploiting the Brit’s cautious acceleration. This proved decisive in Spa’s changeable conditions.

⚠️ Norris’ Mistakes in Closing Laps

Despite leading at the restart, Norris made minor but costly errors in the race’s closing stages:

  • A brief off-track excursion mid-race cost over a second.
  • Another slip in the final laps made it impossible to reduce the deficit to Piastri.

These mistakes allowed the Australian to build a margin and seal his victory.

🏆 Podium, Championship Moves & Beyond

Oscar Piastri secured his sixth win of the year, extending his points lead over Norris to nine and reinforcing his position atop the Drivers’ Championship with 241 points. McLaren further solidified their dominance in the Constructors’ standings.

Charles Leclerc claimed third place for Ferrari, while Max Verstappen—despite winning the sprint race on Saturday—struggled in the full-length Grand Prix and could not convert pace into position, finishing fourth.

🗣️ What the Drivers Said

  • Piastri summed it up: “I can’t see anything … so I don’t know how anyone else can,” during the formation lap. Later, he admitted it was “a bit frustrating” to lose lead in the Sprint before refocusing on Sunday’s race.
  • Norris labelled the visibility “not ideal” and acknowledged losing momentum in the closing laps.
  • Verstappen radioed: “They’re way too cautious… we should just run,” criticizing the delay when the start was suspended.

😮 What’s at Stake

This win strengthens Piastri’s championship position, while Norris has some ground to make up in upcoming rounds. Verstappen’s inability to bridge the gap exposed Red Bull’s strategic limitations in wet-to-dry conditions. As Spa concludes, McLaren look stronger than ever in the title chase.
