Piastri Snatches Qatar Grand Prix Pole After Late Norris Error — Verstappen Forced to Settle for P3

Oscar Piastri delivered a stunning performance under the Losail floodlights, grabbing pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix after capitalizing on a critical late mistake by teammate Lando Norris.
Despite showing strong pace, Max Verstappen could only keep up — not conquer — and ended the night third.

Early Sessions: Alonso Strikes First, Piastri Answers Back

Qualifying opened with Verstappen rolling out in a heavily revised Red Bull, though he and the rest of the top teams initially sat back as the midfield took to the track.
Carlos Sainz led the way for Williams, but it was Fernando Alonso who threw down the first serious marker.

Verstappen and Norris were unable to beat Alonso’s benchmark on their opening laps — but Piastri and George Russell could. Piastri clocked an early 1:20.739, with Verstappen sitting two and a half tenths back.

Q1: Hamilton Out Early Again, Tsunoda Joins Him

Alonso impressed once more with the second-fastest time, just a tenth behind Piastri. Ferrari, after a disastrous Qatar weekend so far, finally crept into the top ten — but nothing more.

Then the surprise:
Isack Hadjar briefly shot to the top with a 1:20.603, Gasly tucking in right behind him.

As the final minutes arrived, the pressure ramped up on Lawson, Tsunoda, Ocon, Stroll, and Colapinto.
But in the end, it was heartbreak for:

  • Lewis Hamilton – out in Q1 again
  • Yuki Tsunoda
  • Esteban Ocon
  • Lance Stroll
  • Franco Colapinto

Russell topped the session and moved comfortably onward.

Q2: Piastri Drops a Monster Lap — Verstappen Through, Norris Recovers

Verstappen came out early and briefly claimed the top spot — until Piastri detonated the timing sheets with a dominating 1:19.650, nearly half a second clear.

Verstappen trimmed the deficit with a stronger second run, while Norris had a scare after losing a lap time to track limits. He recovered to take second.

For others, trouble loomed.
Antonelli sat in danger until a late charge pushed him to P4. Leclerc barely scraped into Q3 with the ninth-fastest time.

Five drivers bowed out:

  • Nico Hülkenberg
  • Liam Lawson
  • Oliver Bearman
  • Gabriel Bortoleto
  • Alex Albon

Q3: Norris Cracks, Piastri Takes Pole — Verstappen Third

The final shootout was defined by pressure — especially on Verstappen.
His first lap fell short by four-tenths compared to Norris’s provisional 1:19.495, with Piastri only a few thousandths behind.

A strange red flag — triggered by plastic debris from Sainz’s rear wheel — froze the action, leaving one final run to decide everything.

And then came the twist.

Norris, poised to challenge for pole, made a costly mistake and aborted his lap. That opened the door, and Piastri walked right through, seizing pole for McLaren.

Verstappen improved but could do no better than third.

Behind him, the final top ten line-up was locked in:

  1. George Russell
  2. Kimi Antonelli
  3. Isack Hadjar
  4. Carlos Sainz
  5. Fernando Alonso
  6. Pierre Gasly
  7. Charles Leclerc
