Oscar Piastri has revealed that McLaren has softened its stance on team orders, allowing him to pursue victories more freely after Lando Norris’ championship hopes dimmed following the chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix. The shift comes just in time for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, marking a potential turning point in McLaren’s “Papaya Rules.”
“Piastri Can Fight for Wins Again”
Since Monza, McLaren had prioritized Norris’ title bid, a policy that cost Piastri the opportunity to battle for personal glory. Piastri’s compliance at Interlagos—ceding a Sprint victory and moving aside in the main race—exemplified the team’s commitment to supporting Norris’ slim title chances. However, Norris’ sixth-place finish in Brazil, coupled with Max Verstappen’s stunning victory from 17th on the grid, has left the Briton 62 points adrift in the standings.
Acknowledging the shifting dynamics, Piastri revealed:
“For the very large majority of situations, it’s back to how it was. The drivers’ championship picture is very slim, and the constructors’ championship is certainly not over for us. I’m going into the weekend trying to win.”
While Piastri will enjoy greater freedom, he noted that some “very specific scenarios” might still require him to support Norris during the final three races.
“Lessons from Brazil and Monza”
The decision to revise the intra-team strategy follows high-profile incidents earlier this season. Piastri’s daring overtake at Monza contributed to a lost 1-2 finish for McLaren, while his cooperation in Brazil showcased his willingness to play the team game.
Reflecting on his decision to relinquish the Sprint win, Piastri stated:
“To be honest, I wasn’t that disappointed. I think I proved what I wanted to prove in terms of qualifying on pole, and that was more satisfying for me than the Sprint win.”
Despite his acceptance of the team-first mentality, Piastri is determined to position himself as a leading contender in 2025, aiming to avoid being relegated to a supporting role in future title fights.
“McLaren’s Broader Focus”
The revised policy underscores McLaren’s dual focus: securing the Constructors’ Championship while balancing the ambitions of their drivers. With a 36-point lead over Ferrari, McLaren is within striking distance of its first constructors’ crown since 1998.
As the team shifts gears for Las Vegas, Piastri’s ability to fight on equal terms could prove vital in maintaining McLaren’s edge—and in showcasing his credentials as a future championship challenger.
“All Eyes on Vegas”
With McLaren giving its drivers more freedom, the stage is set for a no-holds-barred showdown under the dazzling lights of the Las Vegas Strip. As Piastri aims for personal victories and Norris fights to keep his title dream alive, McLaren’s evolving dynamics promise to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
