Oscar Piastri is knocking on the door of his maiden Formula 1 victory, and Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix could be the day the young Australian finally ascends to the top step of the podium. After a stellar qualifying performance that saw him secure second on the grid behind Charles Leclerc, Piastri’s determination is palpable as he eyes the coveted first win of his F1 career.
Following a frustrating qualifying session for teammate Lando Norris, who was eliminated in Q1 for the first time this season, Piastri has a golden opportunity. With Norris starting from deep in the pack, Piastri will not have to worry about team orders and can focus entirely on the task at hand: beating Ferrari and taking victory.
McLaren’s miscalculated strategy at Monza potentially cost Piastri a win, but with Norris out of the picture, Piastri is adamant that the chance for victory in Baku is very real.
“Definitely!” Piastri asserted when asked if he could challenge the Ferraris and take home the win. “If there was ever a chance, it’s now. We’ve got a good starting position, and I think we’ve got the pace to compete. It’s going to be tough with Ferrari, but I’m ready.”
The 23-year-old has shown remarkable composure and speed this season, with seven podiums to his name but no wins yet. However, starting P2 in Baku, where overtaking can be challenging but rewarding, could be his breakthrough moment.
Reflecting on his impressive qualifying run, Piastri explained, “I got really close to the walls on that final lap, just trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of the car. This track rewards commitment, and I went for it. I’m very happy with Q3, but I know tomorrow will be a different challenge.”
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be formidable opponents, and Piastri acknowledged that the race will be no easy feat, especially on a circuit where following closely can be tricky. “We’ve seen that it’s tough to follow here, but if I can get some clean air, we’ll be in a good position. The Ferraris are fast, but so are we.”
With Norris starting far down the order, all eyes will be on Piastri to lead McLaren’s charge. Sunday’s race could finally be the moment when Piastri joins the ranks of F1 winners, and with Ferrari and Red Bull showing vulnerabilities in recent races, his window of opportunity has never been wider.
