Piastri believes he will not reach the podium at home in the F1 Australian Grand Prix.

Piastri acredita que não alcançará pódio em casa na F1 no Grande Prêmio da Austrália.

The Australian McLaren driver, Oscar Piastri, believes that achieving a top three finish at his home Grand Prix in Australia this weekend will be an impossible task. Piastri, who is in his second season in Formula 1, is returning to the same venue where he scored his first points in the sport with an eighth-place finish last year.

Piastri expressed his excitement for the race, highlighting the importance of competing in front of his local fans. He acknowledged that for any driver, a home race is always a special experience and a privilege. However, for Piastri, the race holds even more significance as it is a short distance from where he grew up.

Despite the buzz surrounding the event, Piastri is aware of the historical challenges faced by Australian drivers in their home race. No Australian driver has ever stepped onto the podium at their home Grand Prix, although Daniel Ricciardo finished in second place in 2014 before being disqualified. Piastri, who was 12 at the time, vividly remembers watching the race on TV and feeling a sense of disappointment when Ricciardo’s result was annulled.

Reflecting on the past, Piastri finds it surreal to be competing alongside Ricciardo, who currently drives for RB, on the same track where he saw him race a decade ago. He considers it a remarkable experience and hopes that both he and Ricciardo can have a successful weekend, making the local fans proud.

In the world of motorsport, Daniel Ricciardo represents the less dominant counterpart to Red Bull Racing, while Oscar Piastri emerges as the most promising Australian contender in the eyes of local fans. However, Piastri acknowledges that it would take a series of unforeseen and chaotic circumstances for either him or Ricciardo to secure a place on the podium.

Recently, Piastri achieved McLaren’s best result of the season in Saudi Arabia, securing a respectable fourth place after engaging in a fierce battle with Lewis Hamilton during the middle of the race. The McLaren driver acknowledges that the team’s lack of top speed makes the starting position crucial, and he anticipates a fierce duel with Mercedes in the next event.

When asked if the battle for the top five positions would mainly involve McLaren and Mercedes, Piastri responded with a dose of realism. He believes that, at the moment, McLaren is fighting for the title of the third fastest team on the grid. Although they have made progress in reducing the gap to Ferrari in Saudi Arabia, Piastri acknowledges that they still lack the necessary edge. Therefore, he suggests that the current fight is with Mercedes. Piastri remains hopeful that McLaren will be able to pose a stronger challenge as the season progresses. However, he warns that achieving anything beyond fifth place would require a stroke of luck.
