Peugeot revela novo Hypercar FIA WEC.

Peugeot has revealed its latest racing car, the Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar 2024, which will compete in the remaining races of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2024. The previous version of the car, the 9X8 iteration, had its last race at the Qatar 1812km, where unfortunately it suffered a technical failure on the last lap, after running in second place for a significant part of the race. If it had managed to finish in second place, it would have been a remarkable achievement for a car that struggled to compete with Toyota and Ferrari throughout the 2023 season.

The new 9X8 Hypercar features several significant upgrades. About 90% of its bodywork has been redesigned, including the addition of a rear wing. The car also features new tire dimensions, with wider front tires measuring 29 cm, and wider rear tires measuring 34 cm. This is a change from the previous car, which used 31 cm wide tires both front and rear. The car’s unique appearance is further enhanced by a new and distinct paint job.

According to Olivier Jansonnie, Technical Director of Peugeot Sport, the decision to modify the tire widths was made to align the car’s design with that of its competitors. This would ensure that the car received equivalent treatment in terms of Balance of Performance (BOP) regulations. Jansonnie explains that the changes in tire widths required adjustments to the car’s center of gravity, resulting in the relocation and reduction of weight of certain components. Additionally, the aerodynamic balance was improved through the redistribution of aerodynamic loads, leading to the redesign of approximately 90% of the car’s bodywork, including the introduction of the rear wing. These modifications were made alongside reliability and performance improvements to maximize the team’s chances in the championship.

Jean-Marc Finot, Senior Vice President of Motorsport at Stellantis, praised the Peugeot Sport team for their exceptional work in redesigning part of the car within a tight deadline, while still being able to compete in the 2023 season. Initial simulations and track tests showed that the new car has improved performance. The team aims to consistently challenge for podiums and even for victories, without exceeding the limits imposed by the BOP regulations.

After extensive testing covering thousands of miles, the Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar 2024 will make its competitive debut at the 6 Hours of Imola on April 21, marking the second round of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship.
