Sergio Perez’s Qatar GP weekend took another hit as the Red Bull driver was shockingly eliminated in SQ1, failing to progress on pace alone. The Mexican driver, under pressure to perform in the penultimate race weekend, could only manage 16th, highlighting Red Bull’s unexpected struggles under the Lusail lights.

Eliminations and Surprises

SQ1 Eliminations

  1. Sergio Perez (16th): Struggled with grip and pace throughout the session, marking another disappointing qualifying effort.
  2. Yuki Tsunoda (17th): Failed to capitalize on the pace his teammate Liam Lawson showed earlier in the season.
  3. Esteban Ocon (18th): Alpine’s woes continue with another poor qualifying session.
  4. Zhou Guanyu (19th): Sauber’s performance lagged despite teammate Valtteri Bottas managing SQ2.
  5. Franco Colapinto (20th): The rookie’s tough debut season continues, unable to climb off the bottom of the grid.

SQ2 Eliminations

  1. Fernando Alonso (11th): Knocked out in the dying moments by Pierre Gasly, the Aston Martin veteran missed out on Q3 by a whisker.
  2. Alex Albon (12th): Showed promise earlier in the session but lacked the pace to challenge for the top 10.
  3. Valtteri Bottas (13th): Sauber’s improvement still wasn’t enough to make a meaningful dent in the midfield.
  4. Lance Stroll (14th): Continued Aston Martin’s struggles, adding to a challenging season.
  5. Kevin Magnussen (15th): The Haas driver couldn’t find the lap he needed to break into the top 10.

Top Performers

  1. Lando Norris: The McLaren driver set the fastest times in both SQ1 and SQ2, underlining his status as the favorite for pole in the final shootout.
  2. Oscar Piastri: Backing up his teammate’s performance, the Australian looks poised for another strong showing in the sprint.
  3. Charles Leclerc: Ferrari’s pace remains strong, with Leclerc pushing McLaren all the way in SQ2.

What’s Next?

The final shootout in SQ3 promises a thrilling battle for sprint pole, with McLaren, Ferrari, and potentially Mercedes vying for top honors. Meanwhile, Perez’s early exit raises fresh concerns for Red Bull as they face mounting pressure in the Constructors’ Championship.

The sprint race will give Perez and Alonso a chance to recover, but with overtaking difficult at Lusail, their uphill battle continues. Norris, on the other hand, is well-positioned to capitalize on his blistering form and extend McLaren’s resurgence.
