The Formula 1 race this Sunday promises to be thrilling, with Max Verstappen securing pole position for Oracle Red Bull Racing. The Dutch driver led the standings and helped his team reach the historic milestone of 100 poles in Formula 1. His teammate, Sergio Perez, also delivered an excellent performance, securing the second position on the starting grid.

Perez had a tough start to the weekend, qualifying only in sixth place for the Saturday race. However, the Mexican driver showcased his skills by gaining positions during the race, pulling off an impressive double overtake to pass Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz Jr. in a fierce battle for third place. In the end, Perez finished in third place.

After a challenging season in 2023, Perez has shown improved form and consistency in 2024. Although still behind Verstappen in terms of speed, the 34-year-old driver seems comfortable behind the wheel of his RB20 and currently holds a secure second position in the driver’s standings, just 15 points behind his teammate after four races.

Perez’s confidence was shaken when he nearly got eliminated in the first part of qualifying, finishing in 15th place. He explained: “It was a very intense session. I almost got eliminated in Q1. I encountered traffic with one of the Williams cars, had to abandon my lap, and returned to the track with worn tires. Luckily, I managed to pass in 15th place. It was a chaotic start to qualifying.”

Reflecting on the remainder of the session, Perez commented: “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to beat Max, but it’s still a fantastic result for the team considering the constantly changing track conditions. We made significant changes to the car to adapt, so I hope that pays off tomorrow. Everything is at stake tomorrow. We can fight from there, and we definitely have a strong pace for the race. Today, we showed good speed in long runs, so I’m excited for tomorrow.”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner expressed his satisfaction at securing the team’s 100th pole position and also securing a front-row lockout with Perez. Horner said, “It was a fantastic Saturday for us. Winning the Sprint race this morning and then securing pole position with Checo on the front row as well. In Q1, the track conditions were changing rapidly and we were fortunate to secure our place in the next stage.”

Regarding Perez’s recent performances, Horner praised him, stating: “Checo is doing an exceptional job. He has approached this season with a renewed mindset. He is relaxed, driving well, and his confidence is growing. He is not fixated on his teammate, and that is a different approach.”

The Chinese Grand Prix will start at 08:00 BST (15:00 local time) on Sunday, April 21. Will Perez be able to challenge Verstappen for the race win?
