Pepe Martí faces backlash after explosive discriminatory comment at Jeddah E-Prix

Formula E's rising star, Pepe Martí, finds himself in hot water after a shocking outburst during the Jeddah E-Prix that has sparked outrage among fans and critics alike. The young driver, still fresh in his career, made a deeply regrettable discriminatory comment over the radio, igniting a firestorm of controversy immediately following the race.

During the intense second race of the Jeddah E-Prix, tensions ran high as Martí navigated the track in his Cupra Kiro vehicle. Frustration boiled over when he was instructed to maintain his position in sixth place behind teammate Dan Ticktum, who was enjoying a breakthrough moment with his first points of the season. With nearly two percent more energy than Ticktum, Martí attempted a daring overtake that ultimately led to his inflammatory remarks.

As the adrenaline surged and the checkered flag waved, the 20-year-old Spaniard could not contain his emotions. In a moment that would soon haunt him, he declared over the radio, “I may be a rookie, but I'm not a retard. And that is a retard move, however you see it.” The comment, dripping with insensitivity, was met with immediate backlash as team officials urged him to tone down his language. Seconds later, recognizing the gravity of his words, Martí attempted to backtrack, stating, “Sorry for saying it on the radio.”

In the aftermath of the race, Martí took to the media pen to express his regret. Speaking to RacingNews365, he said, “First of all, I need to apologize for the language that I used over the radio. It was the heat of the moment and I just didn’t choose my words, frankly, very, very well.” His attempt at damage control continued as he turned to social media, posting an apology on X, where he stated, “I deeply apologise for the language I used on the radio today. In the heat of the moment, I chose my words terribly. I unfortunately cannot take back my words, but I want to publicly express my deepest apologies for my behaviour on the radio.”

While Martí’s talent on the track has been evident, this regrettable incident raises questions about the pressures young athletes face and the level of scrutiny they are under. The Cupra Kiro team has been approached for comment, and fans are left wondering how this incident will affect Martí's career moving forward.

As the dust settles from this explosive episode, one thing is clear: words have power, and in the fast-paced world of Formula E, there is little room for missteps. The motorsport community will be watching closely to see how Martí navigates the road ahead after this controversial chapter in his debut season.
