Pato O’Ward Shatters Speed Records, Claims Pole Position at Nashville IndyCar Finale

In a breathtaking display of speed and precision, Pato O’Ward has soared to new heights, clocking an astonishing average speed of 202.621 mph to snatch the pole position for the highly anticipated Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix. Despite the fact that the NTT IndyCar Series championship title may slip from his grasp this year, the Mexican powerhouse is laser-focused on a new target: clinching his first race victory from pole. “I’ve never won a race from pole,” O’Ward proclaimed with determination, setting the stage for an electrifying finale at Nashville Superspeedway.

During the qualifying rounds on Saturday, O’Ward unleashed a blistering two-lap time of 47.2607 seconds, showcasing his mastery of the demanding 1.33-mile oval. Having dominated the earlier practice session, the 26-year-old Arrow McLaren driver entered qualifying as a strong contender for the top spot, and he didn’t disappoint. O’Ward expertly navigated the notorious bumps in turns 3 and 4, ensuring a smooth and calculated run. “The car was great, felt really comfortable in practice and didn’t give me any scares or anything,” he expressed, radiating confidence.

Notably, this achievement marks O’Ward’s third pole of the 2025 season, and his first on an oval track, further cementing his status as a formidable force in the series. Meanwhile, David Malukas, who had been poised for a potential pole position, will have to settle for second place after posting an impressive average speed of 201.922 mph. Malukas, who had held the top spot until the final moments of qualifying, found himself eclipsed by O’Ward’s lightning-fast pace—an echo of his near miss for pole in Milwaukee just a week prior.

The excitement doesn’t end there; Christian Lundgaard will line up third, ensuring that Arrow McLaren boasts two of the top three starters for this thrilling season finale. Lundgaard is on a mission to overtake Scott Dixon for third place in the championship standings, a mere seven points separating the two competitors as they head into the race.

As for Alex Palou, he will start fourth, poised to secure the prestigious Astor Cup as series champion. He has proven to be a relentless competitor throughout the season. Rounding out the top five in qualifying is Scott Dixon, while the rest of the top ten includes notable names such as Josef Newgarden, Nolan Siegel, Scott McLaughlin, Callum Ilott, and Kyffin Simpson.

The qualifying session saw no major crashes or incidents, although Christian Rasmussen and Callum Ilott will face nine-place grid penalties due to unapproved engine changes prior to the race weekend. With all eyes on the 1.33-mile oval, fans are eagerly anticipating the high-line and final practice session set for 4:30 p.m. ET, before the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix goes live on FOX at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.

As Pato O’Ward prepares to chase his elusive victory from pole, the stage is set for a heart-pounding race that promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats. Will O’Ward finally break his pole-to-victory drought, or will another contender rise to the occasion in this thrilling IndyCar showdown?
