Pascal Wehrlein Keeps His Cool as Porsche Dominates Formula E’s Early Stages

Pascal Wehrlein, the reigning Formula E champion, is maintaining a level-headed approach despite TAG Heuer Porsche’s blistering start to the 2024-25 season. With two poles, two podiums, and the team doubling the points tally of their nearest competitor, NEOM McLaren, Porsche’s stronghold on the championship looks undeniable. But Wehrlein knows better than to let success cloud the bigger picture in this ultra-competitive series.

“Formula E Never Lets You Relax”

The German driver acknowledged Porsche’s strong package but remains wary of Formula E’s unpredictability.

“We definitely have a super strong package,” Wehrlein said. “Every weekend, we just have to deliver. Mexico suits us every year, but other teams like Jaguar and NEOM McLaren are looking very strong. There are more drivers and teams in the mix this year, and we can’t afford to get too comfortable.”

Wehrlein’s cautious optimism stems from his experience last season, where the title fight came down to the wire. While Porsche dominated certain circuits, teams like Jaguar proved capable of closing the gap in high-stakes moments.

“Last year, it was just Jaguar and us in the final weekend, but I definitely feel this year will be different, with more teams and drivers in contention until the last race.”

“Bouncing Back After a Horror Crash”

Wehrlein’s championship defense didn’t start as planned, with a brutal crash in Sao Paulo sidelining him from the race and forcing his Porsche team into a complete car rebuild. However, the setback only reinforced his gratitude and confidence in his team.

“After the crash, we had to rebuild a completely new car for Mexico,” Wehrlein said. “There’s always a small doubt—will everything work perfectly? Will it feel different? But my mechanics did an incredible job. The car felt normal, and I could fight with it again.”

Despite the physical toll, Wehrlein shrugged off the incident with his characteristic resilience:
“I’ve already forgotten it. I don’t mind crashing; I don’t mind if it hurts for a couple of days. I’m always looking forward to the comeback.”

Wehrlein used the holiday season to recuperate, turning his crash into a distant memory and refocusing his energy on the championship.

“The Bigger Picture: Challenges Ahead”

Wehrlein is acutely aware that Porsche’s dominance in the opening rounds is no guarantee of continued success. Formula E’s rapid evolution and the quality of rival teams ensure that complacency could be costly.

Competitors like Oliver Rowland, who had a strong showing in Sao Paulo, and Jaguar, which consistently pushed Porsche last season, remain serious threats. Meanwhile, Porsche teammate Antonio Felix da Costa’s stellar form adds an internal challenge, ensuring that every race will require perfection to stay ahead.

Looking Forward

Wehrlein’s measured approach, combined with Porsche’s technical prowess, positions him as a formidable contender to defend his title. However, as Formula E heads into its next rounds, the true test lies in whether Porsche can maintain its edge while navigating the unpredictability of a grid stacked with talent and ambition.
