Formula 1 (F1) has become an enigma shrouded in mystery and obscured by the smoke of burning tires since the scandal involving Flavio Briatore. The official statement from the F1 website regarding Briatore’s return was peculiar, to say the least. Conveniently, it omitted any reference to the “crashgate” scandal or his “lifetime ban”. Instead, it simply stated that he had taken a break. However, it appears that Alpine may have influenced the wording of the announcement, possibly to downplay this significant point.

The reason behind Briatore’s ban resurfaced in the news last year. It revolved around Felipe Massa’s claim that he was robbed of the 2008 F1 World Championship. The key incident involved Flavio Briatore, the head of the Renault F1 team, and his alleged accomplice Pat Symonds instructing Nelson Piquet Jr. to deliberately crash during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. This maneuver was intended to benefit Fernando Alonso, securing him the win and denying it to Massa. It is widely acknowledged that this order was given and successfully executed by Piquet Jr.

Following an investigation in 2009, the FIA accused Renault F1 of manipulating results. As captain and chief officer of the Renault team, Briatore and Symonds received lifetime bans from all races sanctioned by the FIA. Additionally, Briatore faced the additional blow of the FIA’s decision to no longer grant superlicenses to drivers under his management. It is worth noting that the charges against Renault were dropped as both Symonds and Briatore had already left the team, either voluntarily or under pressure.

However, what often goes unnoticed is that in 2010, Briatore filed a lawsuit against the FIA and emerged victorious. The court decided that the investigation had been initiated in part due to personal animosity between Briatore and the then-president of the FIA, Max Mosley. The FIA expressed its intention to appeal the decision, but in the end, both parties reached an out-of-court settlement.

The details of the out-of-court settlement can only be speculated. However, it was not the only scandal involving “cheating” in Formula 1 that Flavio was involved in. In 2007, Renault F1 was found guilty of violating the same regulations as McLaren in the infamous “Ferrari-gate” incident.

While Ron Dennis, the captain of McLaren, was ostracized, Renault and others went unpunished. Despite this, it can be speculated that Briatore’s reputation had become too toxic, even by Formula 1 standards. The authorities at the time felt the need to carry out a classic Greek ostracism, which, of course, was compensated financially.

With the recent return of Symonds and Briatore to Formula 1, it can be inferred that the terms of the out-of-court settlement have been fulfilled. However, Briatore never truly left the world of Formula 1. As someone under a restraining order, he continued to orbit the periphery of the sport, maintaining the necessary distance.

If you examine Briatore’s history in Formula 1 and his personal life, you will find numerous accusations of “cheating” that were legally erased. He presented himself as a Sicilian “Don Teflon” who could act with impunity, which served him well in the world of Formula 1.

However, in an interview with Autosport, Nelson Piquet Jr. suggested that Briatore was “ignorant about Formula 1.” In a way, he may be correct. Flavio forgot or failed to understand that the real crime in Formula 1 is not the cheating itself, but rather getting caught and not admitting it.

Piquet Jr. also suggested that Briatore’s ego was hindering. This, I believe, is a valid observation. Everyone answers to someone and perhaps, in 2009, he forgot that there were higher powers in Formula 1 that dictated the rules.

Formula 1 has always been a world of disappointment and illusions. However, it is peculiar that a man who faced repeated fraud accusations within and outside the sport has been welcomed back into its inner circle, especially when there are indications that the sport is seeking the involvement of bettors to speculate on its results.

It is also ironic that a young driver being instructed to intentionally crash into a car has been overlooked, especially when safety is often treated as the highest priority in Formula 1.
