Some teams are hopeful that a new device will propel them from the back of the F1 grid to points-scoring positions. Others are anticipating that a highly publicized adjustment will break the dominance that Max Verstappen and the Red Bull RB20 seem to have at the top of the podium. However, most teams fail to deliver on their promises.

A common complaint from F1 teams after an update that falls short of expectations is the statement that “it didn’t perform as expected based on simulations”. Despite significant investment and the advanced nature of current computer software, car developments still seem like a gamble.

This must be frustrating for the designers, especially when everything seems to work perfectly in the simulator with a driver at the factory. Somewhere between the virtual world and reality, performance often falls short.

McLaren is currently facing this issue. However, in their case, the updates have exceeded expectations! This has left the engineers in Woking puzzled, wondering how two plus two suddenly results in five.

The answer, in my opinion, is simple, but it is the most unpredictable factor in the process – the driver. Modern F1 simulators are incredibly powerful tools. Reserve and test drivers often spend sleepless nights at the factory solving setup issues. However, just like updates, results can vary.

The fastest car is always the most challenging to drive to the limit. Although tests in a simulator can take into account many factors, they cannot replicate the risks involved in driving it on the actual track. An upgrade may be faster in terms of engineering, but if the driver feels uncomfortable, it may negate the performance gain or even result in slower lap times.

We are talking about small differences here, of course, but most upgrades are worth just that. However, this effect is not one-sided. If an upgrade makes a driver feel more confident in the car, they may be the reason for any time gain. It seems that McLaren has achieved the ultimate upgrade, delivering both performance and confidence to the driver.

As we approach the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend, a word of caution is needed. Recent results may suggest that the new additions from McLaren and Ferrari are finally paying off, and now they can compete on equal terms with Red Bull.

Although Max Verstappen certainly needs to step up his game, recent results may be deceiving. Lando Norris’s win depended on a fortunate Safety Car, and Charles Leclerc’s victory in Monaco should be considered within the context of that specific track.

A chassis performing well on the streets of Monte Carlo is unlikely to translate to other circuits under the current regulations. However, perhaps the recent boost in confidence from both teams could make a difference.
