Alex Palou has firmly cemented his legacy in IndyCar history, capturing his third championship in four years at the final race of the 2024 season at Nashville Superspeedway. At just 27 years old, Palou becomes the second-youngest driver to achieve this feat, placing him among an exclusive club of only 12 drivers who have claimed three titles in America’s top open-wheel racing series.
With only five seasons under his belt, Palou’s rise to prominence has been nothing short of meteoric. His consistent performances, unwavering focus, and ability to adapt have thrust him into conversations alongside some of the sport’s greatest, including his illustrious Chip Ganassi Racing teammate, Scott Dixon. Team owner Chip Ganassi, who has witnessed some of the best talents in motorsports, was effusive in his praise for the young Spaniard.
“I don’t know that you can make comparisons,” Ganassi said when asked how Palou stacks up against other legends. “At his age, to be doing what he’s doing… He’s in pretty rarefied air right now. His name has to be in the conversation of the greats.”
Palou’s achievement puts him in the same company as Sam Hornish Jr., the only driver to clinch three championships at a younger age. The victory also underscores why Ganassi was determined to retain Palou, despite a high-profile legal battle with Arrow McLaren over his contract last year. Known for his simple yet powerful mantra, “I like winners,” Ganassi couldn’t be happier with Palou’s continued success.
Reflecting on Palou’s first test with the team, Ganassi admitted he knew the Spaniard had immense potential, but the level of success they’ve experienced was beyond even his expectations. “I had no idea it would be this much fun and this successful,” Ganassi added, hinting at the surprise and delight Palou’s accomplishments have brought to the team.
As the newly crowned three-time champion celebrates his victory with the Astor Cup, he joins the likes of Dixon and other IndyCar greats, further solidifying his place in motorsport history. And with his prime years still ahead of him, there’s no telling how many more titles Palou could add to his already stellar résumé.
