Ott Tänak Announces Shocking Exit from WRC: Is This the End of an Era?

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the World Rally Championship (WRC) community, Ott Tänak has revealed his intention to step away from full-time rallying after the climactic conclusion of the 2025 season. At 38 years old, the Estonian rally star made this deeply personal decision to prioritize his family, business ventures, and life beyond the adrenaline-fueled world of rallying.

In an official statement released by Hyundai Motorsport, Tänak expressed his thoughts candidly: “After many incredible years competing at the top of the WRC, I have decided that the end of the 2025 season is the right moment to step back from full-time rallying. This isn’t a complete goodbye; it’s a chance to reset, recharge, and refocus for the future.” Fans are left wondering what this means for the future of rallying, as Tänak has long been a formidable presence in the sport.

Tänak’s illustrious career began in 2009, and since then, he has participated in 174 WRC events, proving himself as a relentless competitor. Since 2017, he has consistently stood on the podium, amassing an impressive 58 finishes, which includes a remarkable 22 victories with top teams like M-Sport-Ford, Toyota, and Hyundai. His crowning achievement came in 2019 when he clinched the championship title with Toyota, breaking the long-standing stranglehold of French legends Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier.

The impact of Tänak’s career on Hyundai Motorsport has been monumental. During his five-year tenure, he has secured numerous rally wins and podium finishes annually, earning the admiration of Hyundai Motorsport president Cyril Abiteboul. “While we were sad to learn of Ott’s decision, we naturally understand his motivation to step away from full-time rallying,” Abiteboul stated. “For all the highs we have celebrated together, there have also been some lows, yet Ott has always remained fully committed.”

As the rallying world prepares for Tänak’s farewell, the excitement mounts for the final showdown in Saudi Arabia from November 26-29, where he will end his full-time driving career. The championship race is heating up, with only three points separating Elfyn Evans and Sébastien Ogier at the top, while their teammate Kalle Rovanperä lurks as a dark horse, hoping to capitalize on any misstep.

Despite his imminent departure, Tänak assures fans, “I’m sure I’ll continue to be around in some way,” hinting at potential future appearances in the paddock. However, the question remains: will this be a temporary break or the start of a new chapter away from the high-speed thrills of the WRC?

As the rallying community reflects on Tänak’s contributions, there is a palpable mixture of sadness and gratitude. His legacy as one of the finest rally drivers in history is secure, but fans are left to ponder how the sport will evolve without his electrifying presence. What’s next for this rally icon? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure—the roar of his engine will be missed.
