Red Bull Slams F1 Stewards Over Controversial Penalty at British GP

The Formula 1 world was set abuzz as Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, lashed out at the F1 stewards for what he deemed as inconsistent decisions following a 10-second penalty handed to Oscar Piastri at the British Grand Prix.

Piastri, who was leading the race, faced the penalty after braking abruptly at the end of a Safety Car period, causing chaos on the track and allowing Max Verstappen to momentarily overtake. The penalty ultimately cost Piastri the race win, leaving Red Bull questioning the stewards’ judgment.

While Horner acknowledged the necessity of the penalty, he highlighted a lack of balance in the stewards’ calls, drawing a comparison to a similar incident involving George Russell in Canada that went unpunished. Horner expressed his disbelief, stating, “I wasn’t surprised to see him [Piastri] get a penalty. That was what you would expect. It was probably more surprising that George didn’t get one in Montreal.”

The race drama continued as Horner delved into the unraveling of Verstappen’s performance, emphasizing the strategic gamble taken by fitting a skinnier rear wing to secure pole position. Despite the setback caused by Piastri’s actions, Horner believed Verstappen would have been a formidable contender for the win under dry conditions.

The Red Bull boss detailed the meticulous planning behind the decision to opt for the skinny rear wing, aligning with the team’s race forecast. Horner explained, “We trimmed out the car basically to Monza levels of downforce and were able to get a balance that enabled Max to get a fantastic pole position.”

As the controversy unfolded on the track, Horner reflected on the impact of Piastri’s maneuver, which threw off Verstappen’s race momentum and preparation for the inclement weather conditions. Despite strategic pit stops and tactical decisions, Verstappen’s chances were thwarted by the chaotic restart, leaving Red Bull to ponder what could have been under different circumstances.

The aftermath of the British Grand Prix left fans and critics alike questioning the consistency and fairness of F1 steward decisions, with Red Bull’s outcry shedding light on the contentious nature of racing penalties. As the dust settles on Silverstone, the debate over stewarding standards rages on in the high-octane world of Formula 1.
