Oscar Piastri’s Mexican GP Struggles: Villeneuve’s Scathing Critique Unleashes Pressure on the Young Star

In a shocking display of inconsistency, Oscar Piastri found himself languishing in 12th place following a tumultuous practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix, triggering a fierce response from racing legend Jacques Villeneuve. The McLaren driver’s performance during the Friday practice was far from stellar, clocking in a whopping eight-tenths behind the blistering pace set by Max Verstappen. Despite this setback, Piastri maintained a surprisingly optimistic demeanor, but is that enough to mask the mounting pressure?

Piastri, currently leading the championship standings with a tenuous 14-point cushion, has seen his advantage dwindle in recent races as he struggles to keep up with both Verstappen and his own teammate, Lando Norris. The Australian’s inability to match his rivals’ speed has led McLaren to launch an exhaustive evaluation of his car. While Piastri acknowledged that there were minor adjustments needed, he insisted there was no “smoking gun” causing his decline. “All small things, but when you put them all together, they add up,” he stated during an interview, attempting to find solace in the details.

As the session unfolded in Mexico City, McLaren’s long-run pace seemed promising, with Ferrari warning Charles Leclerc to be wary of the improving McLaren duo, although Norris had clearly outperformed Piastri, finishing almost six-tenths ahead. “The lap on softs and low fuel was pretty average, so I’m not surprised with the lap time,” Norris admitted, hinting at the potential for improvement. “It’s going to be tight, like always. But I think we’ve got a good car underneath us.”

However, Villeneuve’s critical analysis of Piastri’s recent performances paints a more troubling picture. Describing Piastri’s driving as a “continuation” of his current form, Villeneuve didn’t hold back his disdain. “We didn’t hear a lot of confidence there,” he remarked, casting doubt over the young driver’s mindset. “It’s messy. His driving has been messy since Baku, and you can see it. Normally, that means a tenth, two-tenths, a little mistake here and there, not setting the car right. It gets into your head. And seeing Max again in front, that’s going to eat him all evening.”

As the championship battle heats up, Piastri finds himself in a precarious position. With both Norris and Verstappen closing in on his title lead, the pressure is palpable. Villeneuve cautioned against looking back, advising, “If you’re looking backward as you’re running, things will go wrong, and that’s what’s happening.” This advice rings particularly true as Piastri grapples with the weight of his diminishing lead.

Verstappen topped the practice session with a blistering lap just 0.153s faster than Leclerc, leaving Norris in fourth. With Red Bull’s resurgence in form, having clawed back over 60 points in recent races, Verstappen poses a significant threat to Piastri’s title hopes. The stakes have never been higher, and Piastri must find a way to regain his composure if he hopes to fend off the relentless pressure from behind.

As the countdown to the race continues, all eyes will be on Piastri to see if he can turn the tide and reclaim his confidence on the track. Will he rise to the occasion or succumb to the mounting pressure as the championship battle heats up? The Mexican GP promises to be a pivotal moment in his young career, and fans worldwide are on the edge of their seats, waiting for the next chapter to unfold.
