Turbulence at McLaren: Is Oscar Piastri’s Future Hanging by a Thread?

In a shocking turn of events, the atmosphere at McLaren has become increasingly charged as whispers of discontent swirl around rising star Oscar Piastri. Following a tumultuous 2025 Formula One season, where Piastri experienced extreme highs and lows, the young Australian’s future with the iconic racing team hangs precariously in the balance.

After a promising start that had fans and critics alike speculating on a championship run, Piastri’s performance faltered midway through the season, leaving him trailing in third place while teammate Lando Norris clinched the title. This dramatic shift has sparked a firestorm of speculation, not only about McLaren’s on-track performance but also about the team’s internal dynamics. Allegations of bias and sabotage are now at the forefront of discussions, raising questions about the harmony within the garage.

Former Alpine executive director Marcin Budkowski has weighed in on this brewing storm, stating, “The Oscar camp is less happy than the Lando camp, and obviously that’s not going to change after the championship.” His insight suggests a growing rift that could ultimately push Piastri to explore alternatives, despite the undeniable allure of remaining with a powerhouse like McLaren, which boasts a Mercedes engine.

Budkowski’s comments highlight a critical turning point: “Would you leave a double world championship team with a Mercedes engine at the back? Probably not.” However, the stakes are high, and as the 2026 season approaches, the pressures will mount. Budkowski warns, “If there’s either a lack of competitiveness on McLaren’s side, or more in-team fighting between Oscar and Lando, then I can see Oscar looking elsewhere.” This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of ongoing discord.

Adding fuel to the fire, Budkowski hints that Mark Webber, Piastri’s former racer and current manager, may already be strategizing for the future, saying, “I’m sure Mark Webber has already started this conversation, which is normal — that’s his job as a manager.” While it seems premature for Piastri to make a definitive decision, the clock is ticking, and the need for clarity is becoming urgent.

As the McLaren camp holds its breath, all eyes are on the unfolding narrative of the 2026 season. Budkowski notes, “Everybody is in a waiting position, waiting to see what’s going on in 2026.” The looming question of Piastri’s future will likely come to a head mid-season, forcing his team to confront the reality of their standings.

For McLaren, the ideal scenario would be to see Piastri flourish alongside Norris, but should internal strife continue to plague the team, top-tier competitors will undoubtedly be circling, eager to snatch up the talented driver. As the F1 world watches this gripping saga unfold, the stakes have never been higher for both Piastri and McLaren. Will Oscar remain loyal to the team that brought him to the forefront of racing, or will he be lured away by the promise of greener pastures? Only time will tell, but the pressure is mounting, and the narrative is far from over.
