Australian Formula 1 sensation, Oscar Piastri, has outlined his crucial strategy to potentially outpace his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, in the upcoming season. Piastri, who burst onto the Formula 1 scene in 2024 with an impressive debut victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, followed by a second triumph in Azerbaijan weeks later, nevertheless finished a substantial 82 points behind Norris.
Piastri’s performance played a crucial role in McLaren clinching its first world championship since 1998. Despite this, the Australian ace ended the season in fourth position. His progress from his rookie season was evident, yet he acknowledged the need for improvement to challenge Norris or other competitors for the championship.
Speaking candidly at the F175 season launch at London’s O2 Arena, Piastri reflected on his performance over the past two seasons. “The narrative has been somewhat different across the two seasons,” he shared. He admitted that he created challenges for himself in qualifying during the previous year, but felt that he had evolved as a driver in numerous other aspects, and had demonstrated his capabilities.
Improvement across the spectrum is the mantra for Piastri. He identifies better qualifying as a top priority, yet acknowledges that there are other areas that can be improved to bolster his overall performance. “I’m aware that when I give my best, I can outshine the rest. The challenge is to bring my best game every time I hit the track,” he stated.
Mid-season, McLaren encountered several hiccups as Norris and Piastri were permitted to race each other, which sometimes resulted in complicated scenarios. For instance, in Italy, Piastri’s struggle against Norris allowed Charles Leclerc of Ferrari to seize the win. However, the team’s ‘papaya rules’ introduced towards the end of the championship brought about evident harmony within the team.
One notable instance of this harmony was during the Brazilian GP Sprint, where Piastri surrendered the lead to Norris to help him narrow the gap on Max Verstappen’s points lead. Norris reciprocated this gesture in Qatar, after Verstappen had clinched the title.
Piastri believes that this unity places McLaren in a unique and advantageous position. “I’d like to believe that the teamwork we’ve demonstrated is partly the reason why we’re in a robust position as we head into the new season,” he opined.
Piastri and Norris have set a high standard for the team through their collaborative efforts. Despite their individual ambitions, they have managed to assist the team and each other, an approach Piastri deems crucial. Both drivers are eyeing the Drivers’ Championship, but they are also focused on the Constructors’ Championship for the team. Piastri emphasized how their mutual respect and teamwork have been integral to their success, and that this dynamic will remain unchanged in the upcoming season.
