Red Bull’s Rising Star: Oscar Piastri Impresses Helmut Marko but Not Yet on Verstappen’s Level

Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, has heaped praise on young talent Oscar Piastri, commending the Australian driver for his rapid development in Formula 1. Despite Marko’s positive remarks, he emphasized that Piastri is not yet at the level of Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen.

Piastri made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023, replacing Daniel Ricciardo. The 24-year-old has showcased his skills with an impressive performance, securing five wins this season and leading the Drivers’ Championship standings ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris.

Marko highlighted Piastri’s quick learning abilities, meticulous preparation, and composure under pressure. However, he noted that Piastri still has room for growth to reach the exceptional level set by Verstappen, who has established himself as a dominant force in the sport.

In his analysis, Marko compared Piastri’s progress to Verstappen’s early career, noting that the Dutch driver had only claimed two wins in his first 55 races in Formula 1. Despite Verstappen’s current position in the Drivers’ standings, trailing behind Piastri, he remains a formidable contender for the championship title.

Piastri acknowledged the challenge posed by Verstappen, recognizing the advantage Red Bull has in focusing its efforts on a single driver. However, he highlighted the benefits of having a competitive teammate like Norris, pushing him to elevate his performance and strive for championship success.

McLaren team principal, Zak Brown, affirmed that both Piastri and Norris would have equal opportunities to compete for the championship, with no team orders issued until one driver is no longer in contention. Brown emphasized the importance of maintaining a fair competition between the teammates as they vie for the ultimate prize in Formula 1.
