In a thrilling display of talent at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, local star Oscar Piastri emerged victorious in the final practice session for McLaren. Piastri marked his victory with a 1:15.921s effort, outshining his competitors and showcasing his mastery on the home ground.
The competition was fiercely close in Melbourne, with Mercedes’ George Russell nipping at Piastri’s heels, trailing by a mere 0.039s. Not far behind was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who clocked in only 0.081s slower than Piastri’s leading time.
Meanwhile, Oliver Bearman of Haas endured another bout of misfortune when his car got stuck in the Turn 11 gravel trap of the Albert Park circuit. After his FP1 crash, which left him unable to participate in FP2, this mishap added to his mounting challenges. The mishap caused a brief delay in the FP3 session due to the Red Flag, but resumed once Bearman’s car was cleared from the track.
Liam Lawson, another driver seeking to make the most of the practice session before qualifying, encountered a technical glitch with his Red Bull RB21. The New Zealander could complete only a few laps before the fault brought his practice to an abrupt halt.
For the rest of the 18-strong driver lineup, the hour-long FP3 session provided the opportunity to test their mettle with several soft tyre push-laps, in preparation for the upcoming qualifying session on Saturday.
In the wake of Piastri’s triumph, other notable performances included that of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who was Friday afternoon’s fastest in FP2 but fell behind in Saturday’s session. Mercedes’ emerging talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, secured the fifth spot, closely followed by the impressive Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon.
The top ten was rounded off by Ferrari newcomer Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls, and McLaren’s Lando Norris. The entire top-10 was separated by a remarkably slim margin of only six-tenths, setting the stage for an intriguing qualifying session.
Meanwhile, Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto proved his worth with a commendable 11th position, edging out Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Racing Bulls’ rookie, Isack Hadjar. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll secured the 14th spot, followed by Jack Doohan, the Aussie Alpine rookie, and Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg.
Unfortunately, some drivers fared worse, with Stroll’s Aston teammate Fernando Alonso being relegated to a disappointing 17th position, lagging 1.3s behind the top time. The woes of Haas deepened as Esteban Ocon was further relegated to 18th position. Both Bearman and Lawson were unable to set times due to their respective issues.
Despite their struggles, the final practice session of the F1 Australian Grand Prix painted a picture of intense competition, setting the stage for a riveting qualifying session. As the drivers gear up to vie for the top spot, all eyes will be on the home hero, Oscar Piastri, and his pursuit to maintain his winning streak.
