Oscar Piastri confronts dramatic McLaren start failures: ‘It’s not a huge surprise

Oscar Piastri's 2026 season took a stunning turn for the worse this weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit, where both McLaren drivers faced an unprecedented double failure that left fans and experts alike reeling. The Australian driver, who is still waiting for his first race start of the year, candidly remarked that the shocking technical problems were “not a huge surprise” given the challenges associated with new regulations.

In a dramatic prelude to the Chinese Grand Prix, Lando Norris was left stranded in the McLaren garage due to a suspected electrical malfunction in the Mercedes power unit. But the chaos did not end there. Piastri, too, was forced to abandon his race ambitions as he was wheeled off the grid just before the warm-up lap, suffering from a separate yet equally troubling electrical issue.

“It was all fine on the way to the grid,” Piastri explained to select media, including RacingNews365. “I think it was an electrical issue on the power unit, which I think was the same for Lando, but it's not the same electrical issue.” The irony of both McLaren cars succumbing to failure at the same time is not lost on the 24-year-old, who expressed his disappointment yet maintained his composure amidst the chaos.

This latest setback follows a disheartening crash on his way to the grid during the Australian Grand Prix, marking an agonizing start to the new power unit regulations for the young driver. “It’s been a while since I've watched two grands prix on TV,” Piastri joked, acknowledging the bitter pill of having to spectate rather than compete. “Last week was pretty rough to take. This one, unfortunately, these kinds of things happen in racing at times, especially at the beginning of new regulations.”

As the dust settles on this shocking double failure, the McLaren team faces mounting pressure to address these critical issues. With the season barely underway, fans are left wondering if this is merely a sign of the times or a harbinger of deeper problems lurking within the team’s machinery. As Piastri puts it, “It’s probably not a huge surprise,” but for the McLaren faithful, this is a reality that stings.

With two races down and no points on the board, the team must regroup and strategize quickly as they prepare for the next Grand Prix. The road ahead is fraught with uncertainty, but one thing is clear: the stakes are high, and McLaren cannot afford to falter again.
