Oscar Piastri secured seventh place on the grid for the race in Austria after his lap time was removed due to a violation. The subject of track limits has always been a point of contention in Formula 1. The circuit in question is known for track limit violations. In an attempt to solve this problem, the FIA and F1 have taken measures by installing gravel traps at turns nine and ten. However, it was surprising that Piastri’s lap time was deleted due to a violation in a different part of the track, specifically at turn six, which was considered embarrassing.

In the 2000s, drivers used to explore every inch of available asphalt, whether within the track limits or beyond, as the regulations were not clearly defined at that time. However, the FIA implemented stricter rules regarding track limit violations starting in 2022. To combat the issue of frequent violations, they now resort to the use of natural limits that penalize drivers who go off track.

Despite the presence of gravel traps to slow down the drivers, Piastri was found guilty of crossing the white line at turn six, resulting in the exclusion of his lap time of 1:04:786.

Piastri expressed his frustration with the FIA’s decision. The 23-year-old driver believes that the resources invested by F1 to monitor track limits are in vain. He emphasized the challenging nature of turn six, where the gravel trap poses a significant threat. Even a slight deviation from the line would result in lost time and a compromised lap.

The feelings of Piastri were echoed by others, including McLaren, who was also a victim of track limit violations. Both teams were dissatisfied with the judgment of the FIA, leading the McLaren team boss to personally approach the stewards to discuss the exclusion of the lap time.

Andrea Stella, representative of McLaren, sought clarification from the FIA regarding the track limit violation that affected Oscar Piastri. The team remains unconvinced with how the FIA handled the situation.

McLaren was incredulous with the way the issue was addressed. They took matters into their own hands and approached the stewards in an attempt to have Piastri’s position reinstated for third place on the grid.

The likelihood of the lap time being restored is minimal. However, there is a great commotion in the paddock regarding the inconsistency in the track limit rules. It is crucial for the FIA to adopt a uniform system soon to prevent this problem from further escalating.
