Opinion on Red Bull’s difficulties at the Australian Grand Prix and Sainz’s impressive performance.

Opinião sobre as dificuldades da Red Bull no Grande Prêmio da Austrália e a impressionante performance de Sainz.

On the face of his biggest challenge so far in 2024, Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. The expectation was that he would dominate the race as he did in the last two rounds. However, to everyone’s surprise, Ferrari achieved a comfortable one-two finish, led by Carlos Sainz. Just two weeks ago, Sainz underwent surgery to remove his appendix, making his performance even more impressive. This unexpected result injected excitement into Formula 1 and elevated Sainz’s prestige. It also suggests a possible change in Verstappen’s luck. Here are the main takeaways from our writers on the Australian GP.

Regardless of who wins a grand prix, Carlos Sainz’s victory is something that everyone, except Red Bull and their fans, can appreciate. Sainz’s triumph is even more remarkable considering his recent surgery and the fact that he was released by Ferrari in the future. He is not only a talented driver but also a genuinely nice person. Sainz’s narrative adds depth to the race and breaks Verstappen’s dominance, which has been criticized for being monotonous.

On the other hand, I am disappointed because the fire in Verstappen’s brakes prevented an exciting battle between him and the Ferraris. When Sainz overtook Verstappen on the second lap, it seemed like the race was about to get intense. However, Verstappen’s damaged car made the maneuver not accurately represent the true competition between the drivers. Sergio Perez’s poor performance also raises questions about whether Red Bull would have been able to hold on even without the brake issue. It was a disastrous day for Red Bull and a fantastic day for Ferrari, especially for Sainz. Unfortunately, we will never know if Verstappen could have won the race under normal circumstances.

Sainz proved to be a formidable driver, performing well against high-level competitors such as Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. He also showed resilience in bouncing back from setbacks, such as his recent surgery and Ferrari’s decision to let him go. The toxic relationship between Sainz and Verstappen during their time at Toro Rosso is likely to be less significant now that both drivers have matured. Considering Red Bull’s limited options, Sainz would be a valuable addition to the team and would provide a strong driver pairing until a new Red Bull junior driver emerges. Convincing Sainz to be Verstappen’s teammate again may be a challenge, but Red Bull could offer him a competitive car for the 2025 season.

Verstappen’s reaction to the end of his winning streak was unexpected. Although he remains confident in his ability to become a world champion again, there is a lingering question as to whether dominating F1 with such ease truly brings him joy. He is a fierce and aggressive driver who thrives on competition, but has not had many opportunities to truly compete due to his dominance. Retiring from a race, as strange as it may seem, provided Verstappen with some excitement and variety. It seems he has mastered the current version of F1 and is waiting for a new challenge to reignite his passion. Nevertheless, Verstappen still values winning the championship at the end of each year, even if it means sacrificing win records along the way.

Carlos Sainz’s performance in the Australian GP showcases his exceptional skills. In the past, he may have lacked pace at crucial moments, giving his competitors an advantage. However, this has become increasingly rare, and Sainz’s performance this year is evidence of his improvement. He almost secured pole position, but faltered when it mattered, ensuring a front-row start. This put him in a position to overtake Verstappen and claim victory. Sainz’s presence on the podium highlights Ferrari’s progress. The team has improved its race pace without compromising its one-lap speed, making them a formidable competitor on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Although Ferrari’s performance does not instantly make them title contenders, they are certainly on the right track. Red Bull’s dominance over Mercedes and Ferrari is disappointing, but Ferrari’s progress is encouraging.
