The Public Security Police (PSP) arrested 5,962 people during the usual operation “Safe Summer 2024,” of which 2,328 arrests were for road crimes.

According to the data released this Wednesday by the PSP, during the operation that took place between June 15 and September 15, “in the context of road crimes, there were 1,206 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and 1,122 arrests for driving without a valid license, which corresponds to 39% of the total arrests made”, the PSP’s statement adds.

The PSP also revealed that during the “Safe Summer 2024” operation, it monitored 168,548 drivers and checked 422,249 vehicles by radar, of which 7,116 were found to be speeding.

A total of 52,325 infractions were recorded, including 853 for driving under the influence of alcohol (with a level below the criminal threshold — 1.2 grams/liter of blood), 1,340 for using a mobile phone while driving, 4,900 for failing to have a mandatory periodic inspection, 1,617 for lack of civil liability insurance, 766 for not wearing a seatbelt, and 249 for not using child restraint systems (car seats).

Regarding road safety, during the specified period, “14,419 accidents were recorded, resulting in 4,799 injuries (183 serious injuries and 4,616 minor injuries) and, unfortunately, 24 fatalities”.

“Comparing with the same period in 2023, there is an increase in the number of accidents and the total number of injuries, as well as fatalities, despite a decrease in the number of serious injuries (-22)”, concludes the PSP note
