Opel celebra 125 anos de história no desporto motorizado

Opel is preparing to write a new chapter in its history by announcing its entry into the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship starting next season. The decision comes at a symbolic moment, as the brand celebrates 125 years since its first victory in competition.

From the first victory in 1901 to the electric future

Opel's connection to motorsport dates back to March 31, 1901, when Heinrich Opel won the Königsstuhl hill climb in Germany, driving a modified “Motorwagen.”

This achievement marked the beginning of a long trajectory of successes, built over decades in various disciplines, from hill climb events to rally championships and circuit competitions.

A journey marked by titles and evolution

After the initial triumphs, Opel quickly consolidated its presence in racing. In 1902, it won again in Königsstuhl with an Opel-Darracq, reinforcing the brand's competitive potential.

In the following decades, it stood out in various competitions, including the European Rally Championship and the World Rally Championship. One of the most emblematic moments occurred in 1982 when Walter Röhrl won the world title driving an Opel Ascona 400.

The brand also achieved success on the circuits, notably winning the International Touring Car Championship (ITC) in 1996 with the Opel Calibra, and triumphing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2003 with the Astra V8 Coupé.

Transition to electric mobility

In recent years, Opel has been investing in the electrification of motorsport. The brand created the first all-electric rally one-make cup, demonstrating that competition without local emissions can maintain high levels of excitement.

This investment also extends to production models, such as the Mokka GSE, which brings the experience gained in electric competitions to the road.

Formula E marks a new stage

With the establishment of the Opel GSE Formula E Team, the brand is now taking a decisive step towards the future of electric competition by joining Formula E, considered the fastest-growing racing category globally.

This entry represents a milestone in Opel's strategy, aligning its legacy in motorsport with the transition to electric mobility.

A legacy that continues to evolve

Over more than a century, Opel has built a history marked by innovation, performance, and adaptation to changes in the automotive sector.

Now, by entering Formula E, the brand reinforces its commitment to a sustainable future while keeping alive the connection to motorsport that began 125 years ago.
