Oliver Solberg Makes History as the Youngest Winner of Rally Monte Carlo!

In an electrifying display of skill and determination, Oliver Solberg has etched his name into the annals of motorsport history by becoming the youngest-ever winner of the legendary Rally Monte Carlo during its 94th edition. Partnered with co-driver Elliot Edmondson, this young Swedish sensation not only captured the prestigious title but also seized the early lead in the World Rally Championship (WRC), a feat last achieved by his father, Petter Solberg, back in 2005—who, ironically, never clinched a Monte Carlo victory.

With two Rally1 starts under their belt, Solberg and Edmondson have already amassed two impressive wins, signaling the arrival of an undeniable talent in the world of rally racing. “I don’t understand it at the moment,” an emotional Solberg remarked post-race. “This was the most difficult rally I’ve done in my life. It’s my first rally on tarmac in the car and here we are, winning the thing. I just want to say a big thank you to Toyota for the trust and the belief. The teamwork has been exceptional.”

Toyota Gazoo Racing showcased their dominance once again, monopolizing the podium with Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin finishing in a strong second place, while the legendary Sebastien Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais secured third, adding yet another accomplishment to Ogier’s record of ten Monte Carlo wins. Meanwhile, Hyundai had a rocky outing, with Adrien Fourmaux and Alex Coria managing to salvage a fourth-place finish, a staggering 4½ minutes behind the leaders.

The suspense didn’t end there! In an incredible twist, Leo Rossel and Guillaume Mercoiret celebrated their inaugural Rally2 victory by finishing sixth overall, marking a significant milestone in their careers. Solberg entered the final day of racing with a comfortable lead of 59.3 seconds, allowing him to navigate through the perilous stages covered in snow, black ice, and slush with a degree of caution.

The treacherous conditions even allowed the less powerful Rally2 and Rally3 vehicles to shine, with Matteo Fontana and Alessandro Arnaboldi snatching a stage win in their Ford Fiesta WRC3. Yohan Rossel also impressed with a commendable performance in his Lancia Ypsilon Rally2, while Cedric Cherain and Jasper Vermeulen in a Skoda Fabia Rally 2, along with Romet Jurgenson and Siim Oja in their Fiesta Rally2, rounded out the competitive stages.

As the tension escalated, the final stages were nothing short of dramatic. Stage 15 saw Fontana and Rossel battling fiercely, with Evans claiming his third stage win during the crucial Wolf Power Stage. However, calamity struck for M-Sport Ford as both Jon Armstrong and Josh McErlean suffered devastating crashes that eliminated their Pumas from contention.

With the dust settling on a thrilling weekend of racing, one thing is crystal clear: the future of rally racing is bright, and Oliver Solberg is at the forefront of this exhilarating evolution. Stay tuned for Motorsport Monday for an in-depth analysis and more thrilling updates from this iconic rally event!
