Oliver Rowland Credits Safety Car Luck for Stunning Mexico City E-Prix Win

In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, Oliver Rowland clinched victory at the Mexico City E-Prix—but the Nissan driver admitted that without the timely intervention of safety cars, the race might have played out very differently. Rowland, who surged from fourth to the lead during a single lap after the first safety car restart, acknowledged that the neutralizations were instrumental in his ability to overcome energy management challenges and fend off the formidable Porsche-powered cars.

A Race Shaped by Strategy and Circumstance

Rowland began the race cautiously, focusing on energy conservation as he kept within striking distance of the leaders. The first of two safety cars, deployed after David Beckmann’s incident, brought the field back together and provided Rowland with a golden opportunity to capitalize on his Attack Mode advantage.

“I think the race was a good one,” Rowland reflected. “In the beginning, we were trying to kind of save a bit of energy and stay calm. In terms of the safety car in the end, there was an element of luck, but I also lost nearly six minutes of Attack Mode.”

The Turning Point

At the restart, Rowland made a decisive move, passing Jake Dennis, Pascal Wehrlein, and Antonio Felix da Costa in quick succession. His aggressive approach, aided by the reduced energy concerns after the safety car period, allowed him to maximize his car’s potential. However, Rowland admitted that without the neutralizations, maintaining the lead would have been far more challenging.

“I honestly think I would have found it hard to win without that safety car,” Rowland confessed. “I was struggling a little bit to be efficient after 10 laps. I think I would have caught the leaders, but passing them and staying ahead would have consumed too much energy.”

Full-Throttle Confidence After the Restart

With the race effectively reset, Rowland shifted his focus to an all-out attack, knowing energy conservation was no longer a priority. His aggressive approach at key corners allowed him to secure and maintain his lead, showing the kind of fearless racing fans have come to expect.

“When I got the chance to go for it, I just went for it,” Rowland said. “We weren’t really worried about energy after that. So I was able to just go full gas on all three corners and give it a go.”

A Victory Sealed by Circumstance

Rowland’s triumph highlights the unpredictable nature of Formula E, where strategy and adaptability often outweigh raw speed. While his driving skill was undeniable, Rowland was candid about the role of fortune in his win, showcasing the humility of a driver who understands the nuances of the sport.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Rowland has shown he remains a force to be reckoned with in the Formula E grid. As the season progresses, the Nissan driver will undoubtedly aim to build on this momentum while refining his energy management strategies for more consistent performances.
