Oliver Bearman is set to begin his rookie Formula 1 season with Haas, paired alongside veteran Esteban Ocon in a revamped driver lineup for the American team. While the British rising star’s long-term future is widely expected to lead him to Ferrari, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has dismissed any notion of frustration over potentially losing Bearman to the Scuderia after his stint.

A Beneficial Partnership with Ferrari

Haas’ long-standing technical and driver-development relationship with Ferrari has enabled the team to secure Bearman, who has been a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022. The 18-year-old impressed during FP1 sessions and substitute appearances in Baku and Interlagos last season, where he even scored points on his debut.

Komatsu emphasized that having access to a talent like Bearman is a privilege, not a hindrance, even if Ferrari recalls him after the 2026 season.

“It’s not frustrating at all… I think it’s amazing that we had access to Oli. It’s thanks to our relationship with Ferrari that we have Oli,” Komatsu said.
“If we work together and make improvements such that, at the end of ’26, Ferrari insists that they want to have Oli in their car, that has to be a compliment to us.”

Two Years of Development Opportunity

Bearman is contracted to Haas through 2026, providing the team with a window to mold him into a competitive driver. Komatsu highlighted the short-term benefits of this collaboration, acknowledging the opportunity to help Bearman grow as a driver while improving Haas’ own operations.

The young Brit is already viewed as a top candidate to replace Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari once the seven-time world champion concludes his stint with the team.

Haas’ Long-Term Vision

While the partnership with Ferrari has facilitated Bearman’s arrival, Komatsu stated that Haas aspires to eventually stand on its own in nurturing and developing young talent.

“We’ve got to be able to give opportunities to young drivers and then for us to be able to develop and identify the talent… This is year one of doing that,” Komatsu explained.
“We’re determined to make it work, and if at the end of the day we get to the stage where Ferrari is happy enough to take Oli for ’27, we’ve done a good job.”

Bearman’s Debut Year: Expectations and Challenges

The pressure will undoubtedly be on Bearman to perform as he takes the step up to F1. His pairing with the experienced Ocon should offer him a balance of mentorship and competition. Haas’ priority will be to provide Bearman with a stable platform to develop, while also leveraging his raw talent to improve their own standings in the constructors’ championship.

Bearman’s rookie season officially kicks off with the 2025 pre-season testing, where he will get further acclimated to the Haas VF-25, featuring new upgrades and a revised chassis aimed at improving competitiveness.

Looking Ahead

Bearman’s journey with Haas represents a pivotal chapter not just for the team but also for his career trajectory. If the collaboration yields strong results, it could cement Haas’ reputation as a stepping stone for future stars while offering Bearman the perfect launchpad for a potential Ferrari seat in 2027.

For now, both Haas and Bearman are focused on maximizing their two years together, embracing the opportunities rather than dwelling on the uncertainties of the future.
