Ai Ogura demonstrated exceptional tire management skills on his way to victory in the Moto2 race in Catalunya, leading a consecutive one-two finish for the MT Helmets team, while Fermin Aldeguer suffered a crash while leading.
Ogura crossed the finish line ahead of his teammate Sergio Gracia, while Jake Dixon from Aspar secured the final spot on the podium after a challenging start to his 2024 season.
The strong start from Garcia and Aldeguer allowed them to build a 0.5-second advantage over the rest of the pack, with Ogura making an impressive climb of seven positions to secure third place after the first corner.
Unfortunately, Izan Guevara, Somkiat Chantra, and Ayumu Suzuki saw their races end prematurely due to accidents on the first lap, occurring in Turns 1 and 4.
Ogura lost a few positions in the standings as Albert Arenas and Celestino Vietti moved through the pack early on.
Joe Roberts, who was involved in the incident with Guevara and Chantra at the start, managed to climb up to 10th place in the first five laps as he tried to regain lost ground.
Up front, Aldeguer and Garcia pulled away from the other riders, creating a significant gap between them and the chasing pack. Alonso Lopez secured third place after a bold move on Arenas.
Ogura successfully overtook Arenas, putting himself in contention for a podium spot. Meanwhile, Arenas struggled to maintain his pace.
Aron Canet faced difficulties early on but fought back to recover in the pack and finished in sixth place, closely monitoring Arenas ahead of him.
Halfway through the race, Aldeguer received a warning for exceeding track limits and seemed to struggle to manage the tires. However, the future Ducati MotoGP rider was able to extend his lead to 0.7 seconds.
Ogura’s impressive braking allowed him to regain third place by overtaking Lopez at Turn 1.
Canet eventually passed Arenas and Vietti, securing a spot in the top five.
Vietti faced pressure from Senna Aguis and Jake Dixon, but unfortunately lost control and crashed at Turn 10 on the 13th lap.
Canet continued his progress on the grid by overtaking Lopez, moving up to fourth place.
While Aldeguer struggled to maintain his lead against Garcia, he received a long lap penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits.
With seven laps remaining, Aldeguer served his penalty, but entered the long lap at Turn 1 with excessive speed, resulting in a sensational crash and the loss of his lead.
Canet’s progress was also halted when he crashed just a few corners later, on the same lap as Aldeguer’s incident.
Garcia inherited the lead and held it for a few laps, but Ogura quickly closed in and made a decisive overtake on the 18th lap, securing the victory.
Dixon managed to overtake Lopez at Turn 2 and claimed third place after the earlier accidents, but couldn’t reduce the 7.5-second gap to the top two with just four laps remaining.
Roberts, the current championship runner-up, was penalized with a long lap for exceeding track limits, dropping from seventh to ninth place and failing to replicate his good form from previous races.
Ogura crossed the finish line comfortably, with Garcia close behind, securing a one-two finish for the MT Helmets Boscoscuro team.
Dixon took advantage of the mistakes and accidents of other riders to secure a place on the podium.
Jeremy Alcoba made an impressive climb from 22nd place to finish fourth, using his good pace in the final stages of the race to finish ahead of Agius in fifth.
Arenas was pleased with a respectable sixth place, while Marcos Ramirez made a remarkable climb of twelve positions since the start to finish seventh.
Lopez struggled to keep up with the leaders’ pace and fell further back as the race progressed, but managed to bring his bike home in eighth place.
Roberts finished ninth, benefiting from penalties that pushed Zonta van den Goorbergh and Arbolino down in the standings. Jorge Navarro failed to make a late surge and finished in 12th place.
Filip Salac and Jaume Masia secured 13th and 14th places, respectively, while Darryn Binder earned the last point in 15th place.
Garcia’s second place extended his championship lead to 109 points, ahead of Roberts with 89 points after a disappointing race for the American.
Ogura’s impressive victory puts him in third place, very close, with 88 points, while Aldeguer falls further behind in fourth place, with 63 points.
