It is the end of an era. Adrian Newey will leave Red Bull in the first quarter of next year, almost two decades after joining the Austrian team in Formula 1. The destination is still uncertain, with speculation that it could be Ferrari or Mercedes.

As technical director since 2006, the renowned engineer has designed some of the most successful cars in recent history – which led to four consecutive titles for Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013, and three for Max Verstappen since 2021. The Dutchman is on his way to a fourth title, and last year the Red Bull car only missed out on winning one race, setting records for consecutive wins and wins in a single season.

Newey’s story is intertwined with that of Red Bull itself, which began its F1 project just a year before his arrival. Before leaving, the British engineer will no longer be involved in the top category to focus on the development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar – the RB17, in which he will remain until it is completed.

The first Red Bull car with Newey’s signature was the RB3 in 2007, while the following year was the first time a project under his guidance with the Red Bulls won a race – through Toro Rosso and Vettel at the 2008 Italian GP. Then, from 2009, the victories began, with Red Bull definitively becoming a top team in F1.
